Re: Piping and COVID

I suspect that whether you catch covid-19 or not has nothing to do with being a piper.
I also doubt that being a piper has much if any influence on the likelihood of experiencing a 'cytokine storm'...

Re: Inspiring Movie Scene Featuring Pipers

A more difficult challenge might be to find a movie scene containing bagpipes where a piper watching the scene does not manage to find anything wrong with it

Wow, you're right. And the best bass drum prize was discontinued some years ago.

How about the winner gets to present the best bass drum prize at...

Re: The Times Being What They Are...

I suggest we have a competition to see who can fashion the best anti-covid face mask with built in filters made from an old pipe bag, drone chords, valves/tone enhancers, hemp (waxed or otherwise),...

Re: Worst Advice Ever?

Worst advice I ever heard someone giving to a learner :"if you can't get all the notes in in time with the tune, just miss some of them out"

Worst advice I ever received (at school) : "you're...

Re: Older MCC2 chanter playing flat?

Jon

My MCC2 has always tuned at about Low A = 470 with Macphee reeds. I've had it about 4 years. So I don't think yours has changed over time. Personally I would not risk wrecking a perfectly...

Re: Pipers in the old days

Some of these old pictures look too odd to be true, e.g. the dress looks outlandish, the background is painted, the spacing of the drones is crazy wide. I think in the really far out pictures it...

Re: Post Pandemic bag hygiene

That article can be summarised as - copper kills microorganisms that come into contact with it for long enough for the microorganism to absorb some copper. So nothing will grow on a copper object...

Re: Post Pandemic bag hygiene

Copper coins or other objects won't work. It's an auld wives tale, although I can understand how it arose. Copper sulfate solution is an antifungal (they used to use it to spray crops), kills slugs...

Re: Drone reed price rise

Call me a cynic, but I've long suspected that when a new synthetic drone reed brand comes on the market at a higher price point than existing reeds, all the existing synthetic reed makers raise their...

Re: Loose chrome mount

Why has the decoration loose? At the risk of resurrecting a well worn discussion, perhaps the wood has dried out and shrunk, and would benefit from a bit of bore oiling. I've seen ferrules on old...

Re: I hate my bagpipes

"There is 'magic' of a sort in everything"
Sorry to throw further fuel on the fire, but I strongly disagree with that too.

Re: I hate my bagpipes

Ok, I may have misread (or perhaps over-interpreted) it. I took "there is some element of magic in wood instruments" coupled with "pipes being no exception" to mean there is some unquantifiable...

2 - "There's a potentially vast gulf between using an old set as a basis for your work, and making...

I’d add option H : Ask the PS or lead tip to ask the PM if the stress of leadership might be too much for him
Had a PM do everything short of breaking the chanter over his leg at a practice. Then...

Re: Radical reed shaving

My first thought when I saw the title here was "brazilian?"
I need help.

My second thought was; if you're having to radically shave reeds, you're probably buying the wrong reeds.

Maybe all the big controversies have been addressed, the big questions answered, and there's very little new left to talk about.

Re: How many sets do you 'run' at a time?

I can just about understand having one really good main set for comps / most gigs, plus a second set for bad weather gigs/gigs when significant quantities of drink may be taken/emergency backup. But...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

It's odd that we don't refer to man made mounts for what they are. Why do we say "imitation ivory" and not plastic, man-made, or white delrin / celluloid / phenolic resin?
I get that 'plastic'...
