Re: Constructive Criticism for Pipers

I think it’s a great resource, and friendly. I posted my second tune a couple of days’ ago and am looking forward to comments/suggestions.

I wholeheartedly encourage its use.

Re: Piping and COVID

I think what the OP is suggesting is that given the extra work placed on the pulmonary system through piping, that pipers may be less susceptible to side effects of Coronavirus.

This seems...

Re: The 2020 Celtic Events vs. Coronavirus

It was only a matter of time. When I decided not to enter the Friday piob competition, we called the owners of the cabin we’d booked. They sounded concerned, but quickly realized that only wanted to...

Re: Constructive Criticism for Pipers

Anyway.....

I posted a recording and got excellent feedback!

Thank-you guys. I have not yet fully managed to read them thoroughly, but I will. It is also reassuring that aspects of my playing...

Re: Constructive Criticism for Pipers

Well I disagree. We play/perform for other people’s appreciation. As humans, we “like” or “dislike” things.

When I do finally get round to posting for critique, please don’t feel that you cannot...

I have signed up, but not yet made a recording/video, but I will for sure.

Re: Constructive Criticism for Pipers

Surely you can say “I like it because.........” or “I don’t like it because..........”

I’d be happy with criticism of either type as long as the value statement is qualified with the reason. It is...

Which is your priority with drone reed? chanter interaction or standalone drone sound

It really stated with drone sound. When I got the drones, I tried different reed combos and settled on the Ezee tenors and Rocket bass. I also tried Kinnairds, which were good. I didn’t put a lot of...

Re: Which is your priority with drone reed? chanter interaction or standalone drone s

Had a good chat with my instructor almost a year ago about this. He was quite adamant that for him drone sound is first. After that, find a chanter/reed combo that works with it in terms of volume...

Totally trustworthy given the credentials of the writer and “expert”

I must remember the name of this website and avoid it at all costs!

Re: Respiratory droplets aerosolized pushed out the drones?

Makes sense, it seems to be more infectious via the eyes.

Re: Hand exercises

Jack Lee showed a bunch of us those finger stretches a number of years ago. They certainly help keep fingers a bit more supple.

Re: Worst Advice Ever?

Maybe the worst piece of piping advice I received was “keep practicing, you will make a half decent piper one day”

Re: Respiratory droplets aerosolized pushed out the drones?

While I haven’t seen data, my hypothesis is that respiratory droplets could exit the drones.

My reasoning, which may be flawed is that if I can detect moisture in my drone tops after playing,...

bag for second set

Scot,

Something to consider depending upon where you live and how wet a blower you are: I currently play a Gannaway. It is pretty dry here and I am a drier blower than I used to be, but I haven’t...

Re: bag for second set

Scot,

I have a Lee and Sons cowhide with zipper for sale, size is small. Played only for a couple of weeks. It may work for you, may not.

Re: Ridge or straight cut, which to you prefer?

I tend to prefer molded reeds over ridge cut reeds. They seem to last a lot longer too. Troys are good, but right now, I am loving MacLellan reeds in my Shepherd chanter.

Re: Humid Chanter Top vs Just Leaving Chanter in Pipes

The ToneProtector works for me here in the relatively arid front range of Colorado. I only use the reading on the hygrometer to remind me to replace the moisture packet.

So far, mold hasn’t been a...

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

My chanter reeds are typically between 27 and 30” water. Either way, the Ackland’s do seem to overwhelm my chanter.

More importantly, is the drones you’re likely wanting to use them on. Powerful...

Re: Flat high A

The availability of digital tuners has really helped a lot, I suspect. Sure, there are old school folk who will tune by ear, but you have to have a well tuned chanter learn what a poorly tuned one...

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

I have tried a set in my Robertson drones, but not done a huge amount with them. They’re domineering for sure compared with my Ezeedrone/Rocket combo which, to date has given me a drone sound that...

Re: Who Kiddizes pipes anymore?

Michael,

On the joints, I keep the hemp really well waxed. It is a pain to have to keep removing it to adjust the bridles, but it is worth it.
