Re: Why can some pipes play 2 octaves?

Interesting question. I am sure others can provide better answers than I can but it has to do with the stability of the fundamental oscillating wave in the chanter. On some pipes it isnt that...

(low) G pitched chanter?

Hi,

Has anyone ever run into a G pitched SSP chanter? With some minor modifications you can play G-major tunes on an A pitched chanter but lately I have run into several tunes that other...

Re: Just how low can you go?

Dont forget that SSP, with their straight bore, play a whole octave lower than GHB or BP. I am guessing this is not what you had in mind but shows that it is possible to design much slower pitched...

Re: O Canada setting for border pipes/reelpipes

For those who can't wrangle an Eb out of their chanters, low G seems to be a passable alternative in this tune, especially if you are playing with someone else who can play Eb.

Thanks again Matt....

Re: O Canada setting for border pipes/reelpipes

It would probably work better with A-drones in A but there would be a lot more cross fingering. I haven't tried it yet, but Matt's version in G sounds good to me. I am planning to try it with...

Re: O Canada setting for border pipes/reelpipes

Matt, thanks from Canada. This is a good sounding arrangement. Most of us are probably more used to hearing the last three notes ascending but I have heard them descend like this before too. I...

Re: Case for Smallpipes

I use an old hard sided GHB pipe case from the days before MCS. I have to take the top off my base drone but everything, including the bellows, just fits. If I were replacing a case right now, I...

Re: Tunes for a new smallpiper

If it's not too late, you might consider asking John Walsh if he can add a lower thumb hole to your chanter to play C-natural. It's not one of the standard notes but you will very quickly wish you...

Re: Tunes with Great Stories Behind Them?

I don't know the original story behind "The Steam Train to Mallaig" but it might be of interest that it (now "The Jacobite Express") featured in the first few Harry Potter movies as "The Hogwart's...

Re: tunes for a new smallpiper

Hi Murray,

There are so many tunes its hard to recommend just a few. The links below might be helpful but they are not all slow tunes. Some that you may already be familiar with might need to be...

Re: The end of the world as we know it...really?

"Nothing to see here folks!"; sounds like a cover-up to me :):):thumb:

Seriously though, I agree. Things come and go in waves. If there is anything to the reported decline, I would suspect it...

Re: Rob Crabtree Smallpipe Question

Interesting discussion over there :) It really illustrates how un-phased we pipers typically are with tuning at different pitches at different times and still calling it A or D or whatever. Rob...

Re: Rob Crabtree Smallpipe Question

It sounds like a D-chanter to me but I am far from pitch perfect. It is possible it was tuned a bit sharp or that post processing of the sound files sharpened it a bit. Jim McGillivray may know...

Re: Repair of bass drone

Were exactly is the crack? If it is a tuning pin, repair (by replacing the pin) would likely be an economical option. If the break is more serious, replacing the whole part with a new one from the...

Re: Session In Toronto

It's a bit far for me to make it regularly but I would be interested in your tune list and, if visitors are welcome, I would try to come out once in a while.

Will this be a piper led session or...

Re: How to create a tune with an exotic/oriental/middle eastern flare?

Hi David,

Thanks for the clarification; I have to admit, I am a bit foggy on the exact geographical divides between the Middle East, South Asia and the Far East. In my response above, when I used...

Re: Smallpipes & Whistle

This has the benefit of having an easier finger spread and takes less air than a (low) A whistle too.

Best regards,

Re: Learning to march

I think you have to find what works for you. My variation on this is a bit simpler:

1. March forward for the first line of music. If you reach the end of the road/stage/grass before the end of...

Re: Small Bluetooth transmitter?

I have had the same experience. The lag time makes it almost impossible to play. If it was either longer or shorter it might have been manageable. I can only assume that the Bluetooth protocols...
