Re: Been away for a while, input on new pipes

Yes, the Revelations are mellower. The Revelations have a smaller bore than Roddy's standard bore.

Re: Smallpipes Reed Problems

www.lbps.net have online and printed resources.

Ray Sloan’s SSP Survival Guide is available for download as an ebook.

I’d suggest working with your SSP maker to resolve your problems.

Re: An epiphany/blowing tone

With proper maintenance and practiced blowing technique (see manometer), it should happen every time.

Piper’s Dojo has lots of good info on this.

Re: Tunes for Scottish Country Dancing

Volunteer for a jig set. Most are designated as 8x32. This means each time through the dances is 32 measures/bars and there are 8 total 32 bar tunes.

Most 2-parted jigs are 32 bars. You really...

Re: Bag Sizing Confusion

There can be many reasons for your arm pain and the size of the bag is only one factor. Your posture, blowstick length and muscle tension are more likely causes. Years ago I went to a physical...

Re: Music for Pipes and other instruments

They don't get bored if you play fast enough!

But, we've (I play with fiddlers [and other instruments] frequently) done some arrangements much as you describe. I learned to play flute and whistle...

Re: Bagpipe Humidification

I like the clay humidifier. I keep a hygrometer in the case to verify. Used them for years.

Re: Music for Pipes and other instruments

You know any pipe tune can be played by fiddle, right? If your SSPs are pitched in A, you're good to go with your fiddler. If you have tunes that do not have the key signature noted, tell the fiddler...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

It depends on the tune. Eb would be our written equivalent of D major on a Bb chanter.

So what would be an A major tune? Bb, right?

How about a Bm tune?

Or an Em?

See the possibilities...

Re: Recording Bagpipes

You're correct that mic placement is one of the major decisions. You should be able to get the SM57 in the right place, but the challenge is you can't accurately assess where that is while you are...

Re: Hearing protection

I have (what must be) highly sensitive hearing so I carry earplugs for many activities (such as cinemas) in addition to wearing them while piping.

I've tried many brands/models and currently my...

Re: Pelican cases

A few notes on Pelican cases (I'm a fan). There are a some pretty good deals out there (writing pre-Christmas 2018). I just got a new Pelican IM2500 from a big retailer selling on eBay for $130...

Re: Looking for music high hand and low A and B only

William M. MacDonald has a page of "high hand" tunes in one the Glencoe Collection books. 6/8 march, strathspey and reel. They're high hand + D.

Re: 1 4-parted vs 2-2parted marches

I always hear a single 4-part tune. I think it's easier to memorize and no worries about the transition.

I think, my opinion, that two 2-parters would rock with proper matching and contrast of...

Re: Top 5 List

Totally agree with this. Most pipers can't hit a click and they think they can. Agree with the recording (proving the click isn't being played to).

Also, the way to insure that the ensemble has a...

Re: How to deal with noise?

Before you queue up for the judge, and are doing your warmup/tuneup, try to get away so you can accurately tune. If that's not possible, go tune by a reflective surface such as a wall, tent, or large...

Re: Hasten, come with me. Setting a course for Lewis.

Re: 6/8 Jig Composition: Thoughts?

My opinion that it feels like a march is not intended as criticism. I think it's a very good tune.

Re: 6/8 Jig Composition: Thoughts?
