Re: Why are some better than others?

Natural ability. Practice is important, but insignificant without a great deal of natural ability. Some people can practice amply and efficiently and still be a mediocre player.

The top level...

Re: How far will you travel for a gig?

I do a 1.5 hour radius maximum. Anything more and I start to eat into the profits with gas money expenses. I don't charge obscene rates and I'll refer them to an area piper if they're closer to the...

Re: Is Your Main Chanter ABW or Polypenco?

Main chanter ABW Naill, backup chanter plastic Ayrfire. Played the Ayrfire at a few gigs on hot days when I knew the Naill might be hard to manage.

MacLellan reeds

I was looking at trying some MacLellan reeds in my Naill chanter. What's are everyone's experiences with them in the Naill or RJM chanter?

2020 setup?

With the challenging and stressful times (and fewer competitions), have people been using more time to experiment with different setup this year?

I've got 2013 Naill pipes with Ezeedrone reeds...

Trick with MacPhee reeds?

Hi folks, I've tried a few MacPhee reeds recently and I find the top hand is fairly thin compared to the bottom and lack the brightness I've heard from other reed makes I've tried 'out of the box'....

Re: Canmore bag size?

That's interesting, my Canmore Hybrid has been going 2 years with no issue and I've used only a tube trap with a Trap Dri for moisture control. Strange that'd they say the tube trap would increase...

Re: G1 Gold chanter

My G1 Gold (blackwood) is in the 482-484 range with a few G1 Platinum and Shepherd reeds I've tried. My band plays in the 477-478 range, so it takes a bit for the ear to adjust back, but it's...

Re: Reed recommendations for a Colin Kyo chanter

G1 Platinum, Chesney and Melvin worked well for me. I usually used G1s, they tend to have a sharper (but manageable) top hand.

Re: Piobaireachd High G

In my experience, Shepherd reeds blow in quickly with just a few pinches. Shaving or sanding usually shortens their life as the cane is already fairly thin on the top of the blades and can get...

Re: Which is your priority with drone reed? Chanter interaction or standalone drone s

Yep, the tone will come if your pipes are stable, air efficient and balanced. Why people willingly fight their pipes for that extra bit of tone baffles me...

Re: Shepherd pipes ...drone reed suggestions

There's a top level player with Ezeedrone Increased Absorption reeds in his Shepherds (he's playing a sheepskin bag). Great sound.

A good number of players (including myself) like the Ezee...

Re: Solo chanter

I've got a G1 Gold blackwood on the way. I've always been a fan of their products, including the poly chanters and Platinum reeds.

Re: Ridge or straight cut, which to you prefer?

You obviously aren't in a position to judge the quality of ridge cuts if you haven't played them in 40 years. The majority out there now are excellent and easily worked.

Re: Solo chanter

The McC2 is a great chanter, but with the pitch increase in solos in the last few years, more people are favoring models that are a bit higher pitched, 480-485.
