Re: Problems with High A?

Decades ago, I played a piobaireachd for a well known American judge. He said my high A was too quiet and that it got lost in the drone sound. I kept my mouth shut, but thought to myself that was the...

Re: Robertson bagpipes

Sorry for the confusion. I'm emerging from home improvement hell and getting back on line. My reference was to the pipes pictured in Soren E. Larsen links. When I first encountered this stuff the...

Re: Robertson bagpipes

For what it's worth, I agree %100 with Kieth. I've worked on five or six Robertson pipes, mostly those from the 1950's, and they all have been made of that wood. But I have no idea what it is. When I...

Re: Installing a sole to a sole-less Pipe Chanter

There is a "right way" and a "wrong way". The "right way" is to turn a tenon on the end of the chanter and chase external threads on it that match internal threads on the sole. Screw them together...

Re: Rocket Reeds?

Rockets are no longer made. Broadly speaking they were a custom product tailored to specific drone bores, so even if you found a used set for sale, they might not go well in your pipes. You might...

Re: Drone reed preference in MacLellan drones

Roddy, I believe, plays Cannings in his own pipe. I've also heard him with custom Rocket reeds.

Re: Difference between a Salute, Gathering and a Lament?

Just a couple of stories that are apt, I think:

1. My primary ceol mor mentor was Willie Connell, for 14 years a student of Robert Reid. Willie said Reid had little interest in tune histories,...

Re: Advice Needed - Replacements

The most important thing would be to address why you've had so many wood problems. A set of pipes that has remained unplayed for a length of time needs very careful "playing in" before they ought to...

Re: Favorite blowstick? And worth it to repair a blowstick?

For a classic historic instrument, it's worth the expense to have the repair. But for everyday play, I often use a plastic blowpipe that reproduces the old one. Being plastic, I can often use a...

Re: Piobaireachd Documentary

Ed Krintz, now of Charlotte, NC playing for Duncan Johnstone! Also noted James Campbell as adjudicator. Well done, if slightly dated, documentary.

Re: Gillanders on Ebay?

For what it's worth, I don't see the two sets as "completely different", but maybe separated in time by a decade or more. Both seem to have the characteristic bead above the cord guides of the upper...

Re: Piobaireachd drinking tunes

To your list I would add "The Bicker"----which is "the beaker" or drinking vessel.

Re: Setting drone reeds on Sinclair GHB

I was thinking about a leak contributing to the instability issue. Anyway, it's an easy check.

I've played my Sinclairs since 1975 and the bass has always tuned high. Other Sinclair players of my...

Re: Setting drone reeds on Sinclair GHB

Thinking about this some more, I wonder if there isn't a crack or a leak. Take the tenor drone tops and put a finger over/in the bush to seal it off. Then, with your mouth on the open end of the...

Re: Setting drone reeds on Sinclair GHB

Sinclair has a decades long reputation for the finest materials and workmanship. I would not make any modification without a thorough consultation with the maker. If there is a problem, they deserve...

Re: Fat mount set on Ebay

Yes, I'm pretty sure these are Grainger and Campbell after Rab Wallace and Patrick Grant took over the business. They redesigned the whole pipe with (to my ear) a more Henderson like drone sound and...

Re: Drones tuning themselves on their own??

I think what you describe is called "modal locking". The late Dr. John Kidd was an experimenter in drone bore design with a special interest in this phenomenon. He quickly attested that many...

Re: Jimmy McColl

Back in the early 1970's I had some lessons from Jimmy McColl while I was at college. He was the most encouraging and supportive teacher a young person could have had. He influenced me in more ways...

Re: Problem with Maclellan (mouth blown) Studio (smallpipes)

So, "dtstewart", did you ever get your problem sorted out? Bob and I offered some advise and comment and I know the suspense is killing me. I'd love to know what the outcome was........or are you...

Re: problem with Maclellan (mouth blown) Studio (smallpipes)

The only thing I can think of that might "pop" is the one way valve on the blow stick. Sometimes with a GHB the sound of the valve closing can be annoying to the player but it may not be noticeable...

Re: Big Bad Drone

The late John Kidd used to make his upper bass drone in two parts, but it was a through bore with no adjustment capabilities between the mid and upper joints. It was just one, long, even bore once...

Re: Mexican Royal Ebony (Katalox) GHP pipes

The last time I was on his webpage, I don't think MacLellan makes a price distinction. You simply choose the wood you want as an option. I honestly don't see how any company who didn't invest heavily...
