Re: Better teaching methods?

There are so many things to address (both in regard to the thoughtful initial post and to teaching methods). There is the philosophy/perspective of the instructor, just as there is of the band (if...

Re: Pierced Pipers?

Reading the posts above, perhaps this is a regional thing. However, there were some good points regarding requests for pipers at some events (e.g., funerals). Again, I don't see that as an issue in...

Re: Pierced Pipers?

I don't see it as an issue. We have several in our band with tats, piercings, gauges (or whatever those are called), etc. Good pipers and drummers; and nobody cares about anything, as said above,...

Re: Band reeds - what do you use?

To that point (which I agree is important), I've found the G1s (Platinums, especially) hold up very well and have a longer life than many. They also tune well with our chanters, requiring less tape...

Re: History of Pipers' Societies and Drone Clubs

I'm sure there are a number of piper/drummer/band-related sites. However, in working on the history of our band, I found reference to such organizations (e.g., Order of Scottish Clans) by going...

Re: Are replica pipes comparable to the original?

There are too many variables, some of which you mentioned, for any generalized statements. There's the maker, the materials used, the set up, the player. In addition, not all--even the...

Re: Reeding a Colin Kyo for 475 Hz

So it sounds as though the band does not have 'matched' chanters which they issue. That's a bit of an issue for both the pipers and P/M (and/or sound person). In any event, trying different reeds...

Re: Picking the right reed

Pick a medium strength reed and get someone who knows how to shave it gently, working it in slowly. I've never been a believer in a gut buster, handed out with two Exedrin. Some reeds (e.g., G1,...

Re: Charles Rogers

All my condolences, Bob. My Dad died at 77, just two days after Father's Day (but 13 years ago). As it may be with yours, it was sudden and a shock to us all.

Great photo, and I'm sure memories....

Re: Oldest Pipe Bands-Clan Macleay

Thanks, Steve. I decided to start putting together a narrative (and photo) history of our band. I've waited too long in that we've lost too many with memories of earlier times; and the rest of us...

Re: New pipes issue

Are you using the same reeds you had in the McCallums? I agree that it could be a leaky bag (easy enough to check by corking all off and blowing up the bag). Or it could be drone or chanter reeds...

Re: The end of the world as we know it...really?

I hear what others are saying, and agree with William about the Portland Games. What's happened, in addition, in the NW is that the BCPA has made it clear that they want only serious competition...

Oldest Pipe Bands-Clan Macleay

There have been some works on oldest pipe bands. Many on N. American bands have focused on those in the East, and some in Canada, often ignoring many in the West. Clan Macleay Pipe Band (Portland,...

Re: Balancing chanter

Good suggestions above. However, taking a simpler approach, try different reeds. The G1 (I prefer the Platinum) works well in that particular chanter.

Re: Oldest Pipe Bands

Thanks, Steve. That is helpful. Yes, they were with Portland Scottish Pipe Band, originally Portland Pipe Band. Bob was helpful, as was Harry Finley, both P/Ms of Portland Scottish, in filling in...

Oldest Pipe Bands

I have been working on a history of Clan Macleay Pipe Band (Portland, Oregon), which has been around since just after WWI to early 1920s. More to come on that. In the process, I've come across a...

Re: Third time..crash and burn

Ahh, no matter all the other (and excellent) advice, there is the "battle of the voices." We have the one that says, "I know this stuff," "I'm good," "How difficult can this be?" and so forth. Then...

FS: McLeod GHB, 1970 - $750/$850

1970 McLeods. The chanter says "McLeod", then under the name "FORFAR". Drones (AFB) and blackwood chanter (no pipe bag). Plastic (orange in color) and nickel mounted. Hardly played; like-new...

Re: Pleasanton weather?

So very true, Andrew! Even though I believe our band is playing better than we did in the '80s and '90s, the trajectory in playing in this grade and others is stunning!

Re: Breathing cycle

Hi, old_dog (from one to another). There is no cycle, per se. That's a mistake many make, early on. It's on and "as needed" basis; and everyone finds their own balance, based upon many factors. ...

Re: Rubber bands

I agree with you, Blue. It's not difficult to fix; and I've had many a very good and long-lasting reed that had initial F issues.

Re: Back ache from piping

Other than for those with past injuries, I've often wondered if the back pain after playing for awhile could be due to a tiring diaphragm and other muscles coming to play to support the fatigue.

Re: Competition Strathspeys

All good ones. I haven't looked at the RSPBA list of approved tunes, lately; but you might want to check that and see if any are or are not on the list. That might rule out some, if it's important...
