Re: Side Zipper

I've never noticed a problem. If one came up, I'd slip a piece of thin packing foam in to cover the zipper.

And carry some long Q tips, a pull through (piece of cloth tied on a string with a nail as a weight) and a dry cloth all in a zip lock bag.

Re: Orig or restored?

I played a set of ca 1900 ebony Centers for 20 years. Every piece of wood but one had one or more cracks, though none went through. I finally sent them away to be restored. The nickel rings came back...

Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

I had a set of early '90s Hardies. The bass drone was almost impossible to reed, and was susceptible to motorboating. Of course the reed choices were cane and then then the first synthetic reed -...

Re: Modern Brakes on Tempo

Sometimes the old boys played so fast because they had to fit the tune into a limited time available on the recording device and/or the 78 record - or so I've been told.

Re: Shouldn't there be threads in drone seats??

Keeping a set of pipes going is equal parts science, experience and voodoo. One of my sets has tapped drones, one doesn't. None of the reeds fall out, probably because I make the sign of the raised...

Re: Shouldn't there be threads in drone seats??

One wants a damping insulation, hemp, between the wood of the drone and the hard reed so that the vibrations of the reed do not interfere with the vibrations of the drone and vice versa. Cane reeds...

Re: Toneczar bagpipe information needed

Interesting, Bob864. That's the drone setup I have in my old ebony Centers. Big velvety sound.

Re: Bottom Zipper vs Side Zipper

I have both. I can't say there is any benefit to one over the other either than that on my band pipes the bag cover on the bottom zip bag has an end velcro fastener and zipper bottom so I can unzip...

Re: Feather Bonnet Size

The one's I've worn have a slit in the side so in a wind, or any other time, a cold canned beer can be inserted for ballast.

Re: Walrus or Elephant Ivory

French ivory was very common a century ago for cutlery handles, and for dressing table sets - hand mirrors, combs, hair brushes.
I have a ca1900 set of pipes with french ivory projecting mounts; the...

Re: Pipers dilemma

I think I would sell 1 and 3 first off. The Lawries with a heavy heart but you wouldn't want to travel across borders with them. Then keep the lighter of the Naills and Athertons. I'd say the...

Re: Video of really bad dancing bass drummer

Not my style, but one might judge it thus:

Tuning suspect, but good expression.
Execution fair.
High A's off
Ensemble good.
Tempos good, lively and upbeat.
Maneuvers on the whole well...

Re: Never Leave your pipes in the car in high summer.

In my pipe case is a carrier called a Pipe Caddy. It's a nylon bag, just big enough for a set of pipes, with a shoulder strap and draw string, The bass drone can be taken apart, or left to stick out....

Center went to Australia in that year and continued to make pipes there for a while. There is a John Center page on the Bagpipe Museum section of Ringo Bowen's The Bagpipe Place web site.

I have a...

Re: What *interesting* drone reed *COMBOS* work well in your pipes (and why)?

If I recall correctly, in surveys by pipes/drums of top solo and I think band players, among those who didn't use all cane the odds on favourite tenor reeds were Ezeedrone. Often these were with a...

Re: What *interesting* drone reed *COMBOS* work well in your pipes (and why)?

The responses here are indeed interesting. And Thanks for your comments, Patrick. It's hard to recall the choices when I started 40 years ago: cane, cane or cane, and then the synthetic reeds came on...

Re: What *interesting* drone reed *COMBOS* work well in your pipes (and why)?

J&R Glen McGillivray-Doucet Repros Redwood tenors and Kinnaird Evo bass

The bass gives good volume, and the Redwoods seem to be a bit more refined in sound and and blend well with the bass.

I...

Re: Bruce Gandy chanter - reviews?

My band plays them currently with Caldwell reeds. Huge sound and projection. We tune at 479 to 483. They are so clear on the top hand, indeed on all notes, that any sloppy blowing or wrong notes...

Re: Drones tuning themselves on their own??

I have a set of old ebony pipes. If I play them frequently and the humidity & temperature don't change too much from day to day, they will "self tune" also. Often just a micro adjustment over a week.

Re: Tired of the same old tunes at massed bands

Back when I played in Ontario, the '80s and '90s, bands marched onto the field in two waves once they had been pried from the beer tent. All bands showed up eventually or they didn't get their...
