Re: Frankenpipe info needed

Just a bit longer, the chanter stock should probably be 4 inches long.

As to the bore, who can say!

If you have multiple sets of pipes you keep going, it makes sense to have as many sets as...

Re: Frankenpipe info needed

The blowpipe stock and chanter stock should be easy to tell apart.

For one thing the chanter stock should have a groove in it, for the bag seam when you tie in the stock.

They will be clearly...

Re: Glenfiddich Tempos

Interesting the difference in tempi between a 2/4 march functioning as a MARCH and a 2/4 march functioning as a listening piece.

Likewise...

Re: Glenfiddich pipes and chanter makes?

This implies that none of the judges, or other listeners, have a memory for pitch (what we call Perfect Pitch is just the ability to remember).

I've known a number of Pipe Majors, judges, and...

Re: hole-spacing whistle v GHB

No, it always sounds strange (and wrong) when people try to play the fingerings from one type of instrument on another, like the Highland pipers who take up uilleann pipes and try to play them like a...

Re: Wrist trouble and positioning

Bellows?

My Scottish smallpipes are mouthblown, and I find them much more ergonomic than bellows-blown SSPs.

It's odd because I've been playing uilleann pipes for 40 years and don't find them...

Re: How many sets do you 'run' at a time?

I have no interest in having surplus numbers of instruments.

For me, instruments are tools to do a job. With Highland pipes all I need are two sets. No purpose is served by me having more, and...

Re: How many sets do you 'run' at a time?

That's my preference, to keep two sets in the rotation, both regularly played, both going equally well.

There are two motivating factors:

1) At gigs I want to have a spare set of equal playing...

Re: Takeaway tips from botched gigs?

I would have grabbed the second set sitting beside me and continued playing.

I learned the two-pipes-at-gigs thing from a Scottish fiddler! I asked him why he brought two fiddles (in a double...

Re: Takeaway tips from botched gigs?

That also comes up at weddings.

I've often had the people want the piper to stand to the side at the front of the church, then pipe out the couple. I always want to enter from the back of the...

Re: Takeaway tips from botched gigs?

As I mentioned, a very useful skill to learn is tuning your drones while you're playing a tune on the chanter. Amazing Grace is ideal; most of the time you only need one hand on the chanter.

Re: Really only one simple bagpipe????

OK, I didn't get very far... one long trill, and not a controlled or consistent one.

And boy do I know trills! A Baroque Flute Major in my Uni days.

Re: Takeaway tips from botched gigs?

Seems to me that the Highland pipes have an extraordinarily high number of different things that can go wrong, and even after decades of playing you might find your pipes doing something they've...

Re: Getting back the saddle!

Back around 1980 I was playing in a good band and the Pipe Major gave me a strong reed to play.

I went to piping school and the head instructor, Pipe Major Evan MacRae, who had spent decades in...

What are the specs of the two tenors?

I first encountered the different-tenor thing back in the 1970s when I bought a set of full ivory Hendersons which had been played in WWI by a piper in the...

Re: Hardie Infinity chanters

So as not to interfere with the actual topic (Infinity chanters) I started a thread about hole spacing http://forums.bobdunsire.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1340685#post1340685

Hole-spacing whistle vs. GHB

The topic of hole-spacing/finger-spacing has come up in threads discussing various models of GHB chanters. It amuses me that pipers get worked up over differences in 1/16 inch in hole-spacing between...

Re: Drone strength question

Good for you! I've never heard a set of MacLellans that didn't sound great.

What comes to mind when I think of loud (and good) pipes are old Robertsons and new pipes by Mark Cushing.

Mind...

Re: Stories of a broken Pipe Bands Australia

That's what I was thinking.

I don't know the Oz situation. Is there one Pipe Band Association for the entire country?

If so, it seems to me that in a country that large, with bands so spread...

Re: Paid not to play!

There was one funeral where THREE pipers were hired by various members of the family... we all knew each other, so once we got the tuning sorted we all played, and all got paid.

The easiest gig...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

I don't think there's any going back to 466.

What could happen, perhaps does happen here and there, are top bands pulling the pitch down a hair, down to around 480. What's the last time a Top Six...

Just from the practical experience of playing weddings, funerals, and in pipe bands for 40 years I can say that obviously both temp and humidity have profound effects on the tuning of the chanter.

I messaged the seller because he has photos of two different sets of drones on there, but he's only selling one.

Now he acknowledges the photo mistake. Odd that he says he can't edit his listing,...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

Exactly so! Half my gigs are Concert Pitch gigs. When "they" find out that there's a piper who can play in tune, they want to hire you.

Exactly. It was one thing when the competition pitch...
