chanter reeds: moist or dry?

I've been keeping my reed in the chanter with a chanter cap on for storage and it has dried up. Is this bad? Does it matter if a reed is dry or moist?

Do I need a water trap?

I just bought a Gannaway and haven't tied it in yet. I can't swing the extra 50-80 bucks for a tube trap right now. Do I really need one for this bag? If so, can I get away with a cheaper version?
