Re: Forum activity levels

I check into the Forums almost daily. I enjoy doing that, because once in a blue moon there is something here and you end up saying to yourself - "I learned something there".

What chases...

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

Could I just say that I would never, ever let someone come into my workshop and cherry pick 100 reeds. That means that the best reeds all go to one person and be damned the rest.

I make each...

Re: To pinch or not to pinch.....

A good reed should always be able to take a firm squeeze, until vibrating closer to the desired strength. Then the squeezing can be a little lighter.

If the reed collapses on squeezing, it's...

Perhaps there are more published from that particular workshop, from memory it was in Dunedin under the auspices of the National Piping Centre, about 4/5 years ago, as I recall Robert Mathieson was...

Re: When is a Piobaireachd not a piobaireachd

I think perhaps that judges might be well - served by asking themselves (perhaps many times) during a competition - "who played the best?" - as opposed to who played what, or who played what in what...

Re: Easiest to blow chanter reed that produces acceptable results

My post and packing charge (airmail) to the USA is a flat $6 whether you buy three reeds or three hundred reeds. Hardly "nosebleed" rates...

Re: Best Reed for CE Kron Chanter

I have just sent Charley Kron pipe chanter reeds for himself to play in his own chanter as I have for years so your answer (at least what he might recommend) may be fairly obvious!

Re: MacGregor's Salute, The Red Hand in the MacDonald's Arms

I'd be happy to send anyone who wants an mp3 of my father John MacLellan playing the tune start to finish on the pipes. He plays the birls slightly open, but he taught me to play them much more open...

Re: SPJA mess on Piping Press

Sorry to re hijack this thread back to its original subject - the discussion on 3/4's was much more interesting and I have to say I am also one who also got it right in the revamped College of Piping...

Re: Why Logan's Tutor

I'm glad to be able to say that I've had some sort of involvement in all three of the books mentioned. I was taught out of Logan's, which was edited and revised by my father, and my name is on the...

Pipe Major Robert Liddell Kilgour MBE Scots Guards

Very sad to intimate the passing of Edinburgh's Grand Old Man of Piping, Bob Kilgour.

A finer man and piper you could never hope to meet.

Re: Best tutor book

At the College I have just finished a very careful revision of the famous Green Tutor, restoring the original integrity and flow. Some items are added, included those found in a pencil revision by...

Re: Varnish (and other stuff) on Pipes

I know that some bagpipe makers used to like a hard finish in order to stop pipes from cracking. Pipe Major Iain McLeod told me once that the very heavy, deep, immaculate finish they used to put on...

Re: Is it an "e throw"? (Lament for Mary McLeod)

You're describing a movement which does not exist if I'm reading this properly. I think it's an edre and you probably have a misprinted copy... should be lo a's.

Hard to be absolutely 100 percent...

Re: Balmoral not acceptable?

Personally, I don't get the whole hat thing. What has it to do with music? And we don't wear a military uniform, we wear the highland equivalent of a suit. How many people wear a hat with a suit...

Re: Foot Tapping
