Re: Best Chanter and Drone Tuner for Band?

After following all of the hubbub on the Braw tuner I decided to give it a try; wow, some interesting features, including the tracking of chanter and drone tuning. That in itself helps to streamline...

Re: eBay 3/4 Set

I have been wondering the same thing: 1) the seller is experienced and trustworthy, 2) I have the sister set to these in less pristine condition and they are one of the finest sets I have ever played...

Re: Shouldn't there be threads in drone seats??

3D Piper has it right...

My 2011 poly Dunbars came with threaded lower joints, as did my WWI ebony Hendersons, the latter a nicely done job many years after the pipes were turned. Both sets are a...

Re: Just purchased Grainger & Campbell bagpipes

LOL, funny how things go wrt terminology -- I say we take back the term cocus wood (or cocuswood)!

I do know about your pipes, Nate, and will wholeheartedly agree that the tone of cocus wood...

Re: Just purchased Grainger & Campbell bagpipes

Cocus wood is not really a helpful term, as the wood used in the pipes in question is very likely East Indian Rosewood, Dalbergia latifolia, though sometimes marketed as cocus wood. True cocus wood...

Re: Pipe Material ID

Hello Neighbour,

Norm certainly seems to have experimented with a number of materials, wood included. To my eyes these pipes sure look like they're made from Macassar ebony, which some refer to as...

My morning chuckle! I suppose you'd have to ask Stuart, Richard, etc., and/or their spouses, about participation is such a program...

Re: yet another pipe ID

Yes, no argument that button-mounted pipes are an early design, probably the earliest! But it is important to discriminate between wood-mounted and button-mounted. Of course, both are made from wood...

Re: Chanters & Pitch @ 2018 World Pipe Band Championships

Well, both performances with a Shepherd chanter were 1 Hz apart (+ was during solo), so you're likely right. No muss, no fuss, one set-up does make sense.

Re: Chanters & Pitch @ 2018 World Pipe Band Championships

Thanks, Ross -- I'll amend that list while the post is still editable, with credit! BTW, the profile of those two chanters is quite similar.

As an aside, a few years ago, before my time, our band...

Chanters & Pitch @ 2018 World Pipe Band Championships

I've been enjoying streaming the 2018 World Pipe Band Championships and have been struck by the number of bands out of the 12 finalists playing what appear to be Shepherd MK3 chanters.

Some were...

Re: What the Masters are playing

I just listened to Peter's performance online and I would have to agree that there was something that made his drones have a little more depth or comparative presence (though all of the set-ups...

Great compilation of chanters and pitches, Shawn, thanks!

I was able to squeeze in viewing a few of the performances and have to say that the sound and video is really quite good, so hat's off to...

Re: What the Masters are playing

Yes, it looks like a Shepherd MK3. I have one that pitches around 476-478 Hz and it appears like the chanter Jack was playing was pitching at ~483 Hz, so probably not unreasonable.

I really like...

Re: yet another pipe ID

Excellent interpretation -- this helps to solve part of the puzzle! The earliest reference to wood-mounted bagpipes for Henderson I could find is a 1969 catalogue:

I've done a little research (http://www.lockyphoto.com/bagpipeecology/?page_id=1518) on wood-mounted Hendersons and Lawries, and those traditional style wood mounts only seem to be found on...

Re: Your Experience with Acetyl (Plastic) Highland Bagpipes

In my humble opinion, the two major types of poly used in bagpipe making finish differently. Polypenco/Delrin pipes are blacker and appear to take turning better than Acetyl pipes which appear to be...

Re: position of drones

Just curious what you mean keeping your drones upright. Is it uncomfortable to play? Are they in someone's face behind you? Or is the angle slimply different from those of your bandmates?

Re: Shepherd mk 2 bench design pitch

Not certain, but according to this from Shepherd, the MK3 pitches at 475 Hz, so is it safe to assume that both chanters would not pitch the same? Shawn Husk will know!
