Re: Piobaireachd drinking tunes

Demonstrate to the audience what a birl sounds like ... and then make it a drinking game, where everyone takes a sip at every "birl" as you play MacGregor's Salute.

They can sober up a little in...

Re: Solo MSR competition, stopping to tune before strathspey

Actually, quick addendum ... it looks like he didn't actually tune. He shoved his bag up under his arm, and gave his mouth piece a wipe.

But still, same question.

Thanks to any and all.

Solo MSR competition, stopping to tune before strathspey

Hi all,

Quick question out of curiosity, I was futzing about on youtube, and ran across what appeared to be a fairly high-level player doing his MSR for a judge at the Bathgate games some years...

Re: What the Masters are playing

I would say that I take Mainebagpipes' word for it, I know he takes lessons from Bruce. I saw your site from your signature, looks like you take lessons from Bruce as well?

McCallums make sense to...

Re: Ear protection recommendations for the band circle

I use this same variety now .. and the results have been very good. In fact, if there're too many other pipers around at contests, putting these plugs in helps me hear my own drones for tuning.

Re: Ready for 1st Band Performance???

Personally I think these are excellent suggestions ... BUT ... do respect the wishes of your pipe major. If you'd like to try something else, politely ask the pipe major one-on-one, before practice....

Re: What happened at McCain's memorial service

Righto. It would make anyone think about hanging them up.

I hope he doesn't though. I hope NO ONE ever quits. Step aside from public performances perhaps .. but keep on keep'n on.

Re: What happened at McCain's memorial service

This is true. If I somehow were to be so unfortunate enough to be in his shoes now, the shame I would feel is beyond comprehension.

Accordingly, some compassionate empathy from some fellow pipers...

Re: What happened at McCain's memorial service

Interesting enough ... in another "performance" at the same event, many statements made are quite applicable. One of such:

"He was always about basic values, John ... fairness, honesty. Dignity,...

I wasn't just referring to posts here, I didn't say that I was (yes ... there are plenty examples of respectful critiques) .. I'm also referring to the aforementioned Facebook brutality, and also the...

Re: What happened at McCain's memorial service

Agree to disagree. Critique is one thing though, mud-slinging is another.

And we may have the right, but that doesn't mean we need to exercise it. Kindness heals ... mud makes things dirty.

Re: What happened at McCain's memorial service

Fine ... "really bad day?" "Worst possible day?"

Quibble all you want, like it or not, I think you understand what people are saying here. And when it comes to millions of viewers vs. five ... it...

Re: What happened at McCain's memorial service

I quite agree that people ridiculing the guy accomplishes nothing.

Many/most pipers seem to have a terrible tendency toward elitism and belittling those who they view to be beneath them. Such...

Re: Pakistani bagpipes rebuild begins

Glad to hear it. You have plenty to work on with just practice chanter for a while. Most people, that's at least a few months, depending on the methods employed by an instructor. My first instructor...

Re: Ready for 1st Band Performance??????

Trust the discretion of your pipe major. If he feels comfortable having you in the corp in any capacity, be thankful ... and do your level best.

Calum's comments are spot on. You've never going to...

Re: Judges and Manuscripts

This is well said.

Bill Livingstone and his former instructor John Wilson both discuss this issue in their memoirs. Both notably cite multiple instances of what Wilson refers to as a "Braemar...

Re: How to deal with Flat Cs

It's a pain, and happens to me on occasion. If it happens consistently enough, I'm fine with very lightly and gradually carving the hole.

The other thing I'll do (not everyone agrees with this,...

Re: Just purchased Grainger & Campbell bagpipes

Agreed. Set up is the name of the game. If you have a handy instructor, you could probably get by for a while with good reeds, etc ... and probably a pipe chanter replacement.

Re: Just purchased Grainger & Campbell bagpipes

THANK YOU. I sometimes skip telling people my pipes are cocuswood, just in case they somehow mis-characterize that as being junk wood from God-knows-where in Asia or something.

For the record,...

Re: Is the Worlds killing the pipe band world?

All very well stated sir.

And J.R. also put it very well ... it's about creating and maintaining a community. Winning big contests are short-term thrills ... but building and constantly...
