Re: Kilgour Edinburgh pipes

Fond memories of popping into Charley Kron's shop in Dobbs Ferry, NY and upon entering George would most times take a wee break and put the tea kettle on the boil..you could ask him about almost...

Re: Ringo Bowen & The Bagpipe Place

Re: Pipe Band Tuning

Re: Ringo Bowen & The Bagpipe Place

Lots of changes these days indeed...and not all for the better...chanter pitch thru the roof, ghastly black hose all the rage, kilts being worn well below the knee, L and M Pipe bag makers a fond...

Re: Tuning to High A

If your chanter and reed are balanced, low A and high A set properly and in my case as I play a b flat chanter, both notes reading 466, it shouldn't matter which one you tune to..you should be able...

Re: Ridge or straight cut, which to you prefer?

I've never played a ridge cut in over 40 years...I find them chirpy, lacking in depth, color and warmth...they gained popularity with bands around here starting in the late 80's because they produced...

Re: Antique Pipe ID

IMO they are superb...drones bold as I like them...can you share the set up?...drone reeds, chanter reed, bag etc...a delightful relief from ghastly 480 plus chanters.

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

I ordered both the 466 and 480 sets in early March and had planned to give them a full workout during a busy month of gigs and parades and then post a review, playing them in a set of 83 ABW Kintails...

Re: Chanter reed end of life signs

A weak reed will reveal itself on birls, grips, throws...lack of bite and crispness.

Re: How is this piper achieving these notes?

Certain styles/brands of chanter reeds are able to produce those notes more easily and consistently...there was a discussion on here a while back if memory serves...delighted to hear that you will...

Re: Value of Henry Starck pipes?

Starck's are one of those makes that appeal to a certain type of buyer...almost niche like and partial to the Naill sound, of which I am an admirer...to my ear that means understated drones, more...

Re: Tone of new MacRae's

I haven't bought a new set in many years...but the MacRae's are the one set that has piqued my interest out of all the new makers that have come to market in the last 25 years or so...perhaps I will...
