Re: Is travel to the UK in October a good idea?

I'm going to guess that you shouldn't worry because:

1. Brexit doesn't happen until October 31
2. The pound-to-dollar exchange will likely be favorable
3. Others may be worried and not travel...

Re: Pelican 1510 Configuration

Probably should have added that this is a Pelican iM2500 case. I haven't used a 1510. I do have a 1605 for smallpipes and border pipes.

Don't think I have time to take new photos - here are the originals if photobucket cooperates.

This is the bottom layer:

Re: Pelican 1510 Configuration

Sure, I’ll try to take new pictures tomorrow. I sprayed Plastic-Dip on the pick and pluck foam and it sort of turned it into closed-cell foam.

Re: Mark Lee Rocket Drone Reeds

I think so, too. I’m a big fan of Kinnaird drone reeds, in case I came across as a critic. (But Kinnairds aren’t that adjustable for strength either, so Rob offers set/tongue choices)

But they’re...

Re: Mark Lee Rocket Drone Reeds

I think I'll buy some shim stock and try to raise the tongue a touch. I have a set that are nearly perfect strength, but would like an inch or two more threshold.

I'll report back.

My...

Re: Mark Lee Rocket Drone Reeds

Has anyone come up with a technique to make Rockets easier or harder? Moving the bridles doesn't really work for me. I wonder if changing the bridle to a different material would do it.

Re: Scottish Smallpipes - New Reeds for an Old Set

Bags aren't too difficult to find. Ask all the quality US SSP makers and you'll find something. An quality alternate if you don't mind ordering out of the US is:

Re: The Struggle

Just checked in Dougie’s tunebook. It’s called “The Gem So Small”. The Struggle is a two-part reel. Same as Scotch Guard III and Forward With Scotland’s Past. Two part reel.

Re: The Struggle

The only other book I’ve seen it in is “Something Blew” (I think). I’m traveling but will check when home for the number of parts. You could contact Mr. Pincock.

Re: Practice Chanter Recommendations

You can try putting a couple of dental rubber bands around the reed to diminish the volume. Try one or two. With two, try to vary the amount of space separating the rubber bands on the blade.

If...

Re: The Struggle

Such a great tune.

In a related story, I was leaving Stirling Castle last week and heard an unmistakable voice. Turning my head, I saw Mr. Pincock arranging some of his students for a photo. They...

Re: Video and audio recordings

A Zoom H2n is a very good recording device per my experience. It's audio only.

A Zoom Q2n-4K is a good video/audio recorder.

If you need video, and your phone is good, a number of external...

Re: What happened to Omega Drone reeds

If you repeated your recording with another set of pipes, you'd likely find all of this assessment would change.

At least that's what I find and I've been doing high-quality drone reed recording...

Re: Learning to march

Sabotage!

It’s a trick I heard Jack Lee give. It gives emphasis to the beat and lets you be mindful when practicing.

Take off your left shoe while practicing
Sing the tune while marching

Tip: Few judges expect marching back and forth during the whole tune. On un-level ground, I've marched 1/2 of one part and...

Re: Tunes you can play at an Irish Session on Scottish Smallpipes in A

I find it an invaluable resource!

Here are some reels to go along with the jigs I mentioned:

Matt People's #1
Humours of Tulla
The Eel in the Sink
The High Reel
Dinky's (has a high B, just...

Re: Tunes you can play at an Irish Session on Scottish Smallpipes in A

Patrick, you know of all the tune books with “Irish” tunes for bagpipes. You know, more than anyone, because of your stewardship of the Peekar index.

So, the Terry Tully books, among others (for...

Re: Learning Tunes By Ear

One of my favorite reels!

Kidding, of course, but it's a good example of the inaccuracies of a couple of session myths:

1. Real music is memorized
2. Memorized music is played at a higher...

Re: Learning Tunes By Ear

It's your call, but I've had great evenings with beginners making music. You'd hate it, but I've had a lot a pleasure. Playing music with others, for me, is a privilege which comes without judgement....
