Re: Tin Whistle to Play With GHB
Hi, Elfsong makes a tin whistle with the same fingering as the bagpipe. It's called the enchanter.
You can get one in Bb.
I had one for a bit, thought I'd use it for quiet practice.
It...

Re: Cowall Pipes?
Hi,
I have 2 of Robins' practice chanters.
He also made me a smallpipe chanter in "C" for my Gibson fireside pipes.
I've been happy with them.

Re: Metal chanters?
Very cool to know, thank you. :)
I have no experience with machining it, just cutting and trimming it occasionally, usually an alloy of it.
It is very biocompatible though.

Re: Decent Smallpipe Bellows Makers
Robin Beck of Cowal Bagpipes makes and sells bellows as well.
I've never used his bellows but I have a couple of his practice chanters and a smallpipe chanter that I'm very happy with.

Re: Goose v. Bagpipes, Timetable.
Hi Hot Gas,
I'm still a relative neophyte so take this for what it's worth.
I learned on the practice chanter for about 6 months before starting on the bagpipe.
No goose in between.
I...

Re: Hamon reeds in Firesides
Hi,
I'm using a Korg CA40 tuner.
The light is green when I set it to 451 hz, and the note reads "C" when I play a low A.
I'm not sure what that translates to in actual pitch.

Re: Reeds for Colin Kyo Chanter
I believe Murray just mentioned what reeds he recommends in the above quote.
I love how on this forum you can get an answer from the maker themselves.

Re: Electronic Tuner for Border Pipes?
Hi Bob,
I was able to tune my fireside pipes with a korg CA40 chromatic tuner.
Once I adjusted the chanter so high and low A were in tune I looked at what the Korg was reading.
I then tuned...

Re: Gibson Fireside Pipes
I think my B flat chanter is around 438ish.
It needed tape on most of the holes.
I haven't used it in awhile though.
I like the sound of my C chanter better.

Re: Gibson Fireside Pipes
You can try shortening the tongues of the tenor drone reed.
It'll raise the pitch though so you'll need to lengthen the drone.

Re: Bagpipe shops in NYC?
If you're driving to NYC, stop by Pipeline Celtic Themes in Pompton Lakes, NJ (just outside of NYC).
I don't think there are any shops in NYC.
Kron bagpipes is a short Metro North train ride up...

Re: Walsh small pipes
Hi John,
What are you going to be using them for?
Just playing by yourself at home?
In a group with other instruments?
The Walsh small pipes are mouth blown right?

Re: Can tone improve with age?
I do believe that tone improves with age.
I've heard a marked improvement in tone with each year I've been playing.
Sometimes I sound better each month,
sometimes it seems that I slide back.

Re: Gibson Fireside Pipes
Hi,
Gibson firesides are bass, baritone, and tenor.
Bass and tenor are tuned to "A" of the chanter,
baritone is tuned to "E" of the chanter.
Get a set of Seth Hamon single bladed drone...

I have Dunfion pipes.
I'm using Canning drone reeds and my chanter is set at 468.
I have no trouble tuning the tenors to that pitch.
On the bass drone I...

I've watched the video numerous times (I think my wife finally hid it away somewhere).
I think you have to impart a direction (either up or down) as you are twisting the drone.
By twisting and...

Piping on the space station
Hi all,
A fraternity brother of mine passed away unexpectedly last week.
He worked for Wyle labs.
The crew of the ISS recorded a tribute for him.
Thought I'd share it here.
