Re: "Outlander Tunes"

Not to mention dropping a monolingual English Speaker into a society that is largely monolingual Gaelic speaking. Also, a 20th century individual would have a very hard time, language differences...

Re: Band reeds - what do you use?

I use Macphee reeds in my poly McCallum band chanter, and also in my McCallum ABW McC2 chanter for solo work. That being said, our band is getting matching chanters from a different maker in the...

Re: Taps on pipes?

Interestingly, a local street band PM used to play Trumpet Voluntary for weddings, and gave me a copy of his setting. I have used it (requested) for several weddings over the years, it's fairly...

Re: 78 rpm

It's hard for younger pipers to understand, but tuning was a lot harder back in the days of cane reeds and hide bags. It was much more common when I began my piping journey in 1982 to hear wildly...

Re: I.D. Cover sketch on S. Jones tutor

It is a dirk, you can clearly see the handle. BTW Scottish Gaels of yore wore the dirk in the front, it was a symbol of Manhood.

Re: The end of the world as we know it...really?

I, too, have gained perspective by playing with several Fire Dept bands in the area the past few years, and I'm also playing with two competitive pipe bands (long story), and started my piping career...

Re: Problem going from E to low A

This type of problem with Low A (and Low G) is usually a sign that your chanter reed is too easy.

Re: Suspicious/dubious set posted online?

Maybe it's just me, but I'm always suspicious when folks list bagpipes as "RG Hardy" or "MacCallum". Misspelled firm names can be a sign that somethings not right.

Re: Taps on pipes?

I've had to play Taps on a number of occasions for military funerals where there was a problem with the electronic bugle. I was asked to sub in, and did so, otherwise there would have been no Taps...

Jack has been to Central Texas a number of times in recent years for an annual workshop, so I've been able to see and hear these bagpipes in person and talk to Jack about them. Outstanding...

Re: Too much tape

Especially the lower Grade bands don't think about this, never enters their mind. I'll admit to this happening to me when I competed solo. The competition was at a sports field and I tuned up on a...

Re: Game of Thrones 4-part arrangement on the highland pipes!

True but YouTube policy is to remove videos that violate copyright, so if the video is up for very long chances are that it's there with approval.

Re: Adjusting chanter tuning with hemp

Over the years I've seen a number of ABW chanters like that. Happens when newbies try to remove the chanter from the stock by grabbing it at the bottom of the chanter and twisting to remove. ...
