What kind of practice chanter do you have? You should have one with countersink holes.

That will allow you to feel the holes.

I've been marching with Blakey's in my heels since the late 70's without any issue. They save my heels of my shoes and back in the day the heels of my boots and they are saving my marching brogues....

From your description it is not for the mouth piece, nor the chanter but it goes up the top part where the reed is exposed the moisture to swab that out.

A pipe cleaner would be for the mouth...
