Re: Is anyone still updating the BobDunsire.com main site itself?

Clearly the directory is never going to spring back to life, but if it's not a major effort I'd like to vote for its retention. I've once or twice found useful things with a combination of the...

Re: Chanter alignment with synthetic bags....

Aye, that does sound excessive. If it was anyone else I would start talking about hand tension and looking at what the thumbs are doing, and likewise the stock and chanter being securely hemped and...

Re: Chanter alignment with synthetic bags....

I believe, and I don't have much to go on here, that this effect is not the bag, but the joints of the player warming up/settling/relaxing, whatever you want to call it. Every time I get the pipes...

Re: Bass reeds and tuning

> the tongue can vibrate more freely

This would mean it would swing further, which would slow down the frequency, leading to a flatter pitch.

Re: Bass reeds and tuning

Yes, but - why? If anything, to me warmer air -> air expands -> lower pressure -> less stiff air column -> lower pitch.

Am I getting something wrong here?

Re: Practice Chanter Reed Moisture Help and an Introduction

If you take a small square of newspaper - about 2" - and crumple it into a loose ball and poke it up inside the chanter top, it will absorb a huge amount of moisture. When I was learning a lot of...

Re: Geico commercial with pipes

Absolutely this. Don't be afraid to embrace a sense of the ridiculous. Get up a petition to ask Warren to hire decent pipers for his commercials. Make it all very tongue in cheek and get your...

Re: Critique my playing

Recording the bagpipe well is a bit of a black art. The biggest problem you have is that your microphone is not coping with the sound pressure level - it's just about on the edge where it's not...

Re: Bass reeds and tuning

What's the physical mechanism that causes a drone reed that becomes warmer to become sharper?

Re: Calling Doon the Line

No, it wasn't. A different song, called On the Road To Passchendaele was. The details are on Alan's website.

Re: Calling Doon the Line

That is a different tune, called On The Road To Passchendaele, by Gavin Stoddart, and with lyrics by the same composer. Page 182 of SG III. Entirely different song to Calling Doon The Line.

Re: Bass reeds and tuning

Yes, if you have a wandering part of your setup it is more often than not the bass. Sometimes it is the drone and sometimes the reed, but I've never worked out a satisfactory explanation.

Re: So this is what the wait feels like... (new pipes)

I suspect it was a characteristic of reeds profiled with a chisel on a flat surface, rather than sanded as most modern reeds are. It would have the effect of making the tips less tapered, making the...

Re: Unusual set of pipes on Ebay uk

Bass is clearly different from the tenors and looks a bit more finished. Home-made? Quite possibly. Even the two tenors aren't identical in the wood.

Re: Green Hills of Tyrol earliest setting.

So, to answer my own question - yes, it does - the exact scene depicts Tyroleans conquered by Germans being forced to dance with their conquerors, in what looks like a beautiful pastoral scene.

For easier reading for those used to A-based melodies, here it is transposed up a tone and in 3/4 rather than waltz beaming:

Re: Help with breathing/squeezing technique...

Hard reeds tend to vary in pitch less with pressure; they're either on pitch or silent, both acceptable answers from a competition point of view.
