Re: Interested In Troy Reeds

You can always place elastic bands around the reed during the break-in phase. I often use this method for new reeds which are slightly harder than what I'm used to, but also not hard enough to...

Re: Roddy MacLeod High-A

I echo the above comment about finding the right bass drone reed.

I've found a cane bass tends to give the nicest 'ring' to the chanter.

Re: Best drone reed?

I have a set of 1890s cocuswood Hendersons, and found normal Ezeedrone tenors to suit them perfectly.

With regards to the bass, I've found that a smoother sound will be achieved when the middle...

'Wet' vs 'Dry' blowers - a myth?

Found this article on Dojo University: http://learn.dojouniversity.com/good-bagpipe-sound-is-moisture-control-part-i/

Vin Janoski, the author, aims to de-construct the myth behind wet and dry...

Re: alumina vs. zeolite

'Attapulgite' is the substance used in the Ross Canister 'Kitty Litter' systems, not zeolite.

You can email the owner of Ross Bagpipes, Patrick Ho, directly at Bagpipe@bigpond.net.au to order...

Re: Stuart Liddell Recital it doesn't get any better

Stuart plays the old Ross (black) bag, with ezeedrone tenors and a Henderson Harmonic Bass.

Re: Reed never stabilizes

Thanks for your response Ross.

1) I alternate between a few practice locations. It's currently quite cold here in Aus outside. I play in:

- A small, enclosed practice room
- A chapel...

Re: Reed never stabilizes

Thanks for all of your responses -

Typically after a 30 min blow, the chanter stock and chanter seat will be wet, however the rest of the bag is bone dry (though usually a bit warm).

After more...

Re: Reed never stabilises

I've swapped out the chanter stock for another...will give that a shot and see what happens.

The connection at the blowpipe stock is fully secure.

I'm storing the reed in a piper's pal, however...

Reed never stabilizes

Hey all,

I've hit a conundrum which has been frustrating me for the last few months. During my practice sessions, my reed will continue to rise in pitch seemingly indefinitely - to the point...

Re: Mac-1 chanter from MacLellan

Just pick a chanter and stick with it. Going back and forward with different chanters constantly is just going to make it harder for you to get used to one specific chanter.

The McC2, Naill and...

Re: Stuart Liddell - Canmore?

He's been playing his old black ross bag for solos since 2009, I believe.

In the 'Valley of the Deer' show he's playing his sheepskin bag.

Occasionally he's played the canmore bag when he's...

Re: Canmore, Bannatyne, or Gannaway?

The G1 'High Efficiency Split Stock' has a bore wide enough to accommodate a moose valve. This is what I use in my current setup - moose valve + tube with trap dri (you can buy them from G1 with the...

Re: Old Hendersons, drone suggestions

Have a set of 1890 cocuswood silver and ivory Hendersons in a sheepskin setup.

For tenors, Ezeedrones work the best for me - I've recently been trialling a set of short Ezeedrones and they're...

Re: Reed recommendations for ebony Lawries

I used to play an old set of Lawries. Ezeedrone tenors and a Henderson Harmonic Deluxe Bass work a treat.

That being said, that combination has served me well in every set of pipes I've ever...

Re: Stuart Liddell pitch

That's the positioning of the stocks in the grommets on his synthetic ross bag. It can also be manipulated to a point if you tie the drone cords in at certain angles.

Re: New Duncan MacRae pipes by Stuart Liddell

Well Stuart doesn't have the original MacRae blowpipe...you can see he plays a modern style Crisler blowpipe.

If he still had it, they would have no doubt made an exact replica of it as well. But...

Re: Regular PC vs. long PC

Can't think of a reason why a regular pc would be considered more beneficial than a long pc.

Yes, the regular pc can be a bit more comfortable to play, but a long pc just translates much better...

Re: New Canmore bag - thoughts?

I get this same feeling. Just bought a medium canmore hybrid and my arm and wrist are bent at an awkward angle, and its quite painful for the top hand. I'm quite a slim build, 6 foot 1, but very...

Re: Thumb Tension

Few ideas:

1) Take your thumb off completely! This will help reduce strain on your bottom hand. Start on the practice chanter while doing basic technique, then build up to tunes etc.

Re: Shopping for First Pipes

Poly sets are tonally inferior, and unlike wood, they cannot absorb moisture. This means they are a lot more prone to going out of tune, as moist air within the drone chambers will simply drip back...
