Re: Dojo U on Embellishments and "Social Pressure"

I did get a chuckle out of this: "The reason we want to play embellishments so badly...". That's not how I want to play them, that's just how it comes out.

Re: Bagpipe Backlash - McDonald's restaurant

Reservations? Yes, I'm with that party over there, close to the fire. No, not that close - those are the lawyers.:)

Re: Bagpipe Backlash - McDonald's restaurant

On the bright side, it appears that I AM qualified to be a recording artist.

Re: Off-brand "Bagpipe Trend" set: Lawrie? Pakistani?

I believe Hardie or Lawrie used to sell a "starter" set made of Rosewood. Could that be the wood used for this set?

Re: Knowing when a hide bag is done

"think it's gives the pipes a nicer more resonant sound" I've always thought the same thing. It's almost as if the inflated bag is like a drum giving off its own vibrations.

Re: BDF Reach

Just in very rough numbers: Canada, with a population 1/10th of the US, has almost half as many members as the US. Scotland, with a population 1/60th of the US, has 1/9th as many members as the US....

Re: BDF Reach

The number of registered users is certainly smaller than the number of site visitors. And I imagine that the visitors can also not fill out the poll?

Re: Bagpipes in a silent decline?

I wonder how many bands saw an increase in interest after Braveheart? I did get a kick out of the phrase "silent" decline - not a word I ever associated with the bagpipes.

Re: PM on the rampage!

I'm afraid I'd just stand there in shock. On the bright side, that might give you a clean cut-off. I hope this is just a hypothetical situation that none of us will ever encounter.

Re: Forum activity levels

I imagine that would take more people willing to do additional monitoring, moderating, account management, etc. It would also mean that what was posted would end up in different locations, instead of...

Re: Pipers in the old days

In the first photo of the first post: Another odd feature is that the stone wall behind them appears to actually be a painted set piece. Any idea of when/where that was taken?

Re: Who makes this reed?

David, thanks for the informative review of the reed. I don't know if the reed will draw any interest from competing pipers - especially in the higher grades - but someone faced with an hour long...

Re: Forum activity levels

One feature I see in some other forums is the ability to "reply" to a specific post in a thread, with the reply listed under the original post. It helps to keep track of individual conversations...

Re: Forum activity levels

One of those somethings is that a number of people like myself do not have Facebook or other social media accounts and no intention of getting them.

Re: Kilts and proper kilts, Oy vey ist meir....

A wool kilt in a 4th of July parade in a St Louis summer is a march in to Hell with melted asphalt stuck to the bottom of your ghilly brogues. A St Louis columnist suggested every year that business...

Re: Early Henderson bore sizes

I think the suggestion to contact Alastair Dunn is an excellent one. That's where I would start. But on Henderson bores: It depends a lot on who does the measuring and when - wood moves over time....

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

I think calling it "Imitation Ivory" does help describe what look you are going for. Some attempts are more successful than others. A version of celluloid used on some points was built in layers so...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

I bet Briar root would be great, if you can find it large enough. Mesquite and Osage Orange are also great and work well. In my area, I'm lucky enough to be able to harvest Osage Orange, and it has a...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

If you play in a band, you might tend to opt for a choice that tends to be somewhat uniform with everyone else, just as in dress, drone cords and pipe bag. But I think mainly it's tradition and...

Re: eBay Scammer, BEWARE - Henderson pipes

Doc, I guess we'll also need notarized affidavits from all the involved parties, and a signed confession from the would-be perpetrator would be nice.
