Re: Appalachian music Boil Em Cabbage for pipes etc

This one is specifically meant to speak to Appalachian musical roots--it is beautifully done.

Re: any top grade pipers use drone valves ?

Hey Shawn,

It's worth also mentioning that there's a new generation of full-synthetic bags out there that have made big strides. The Ross red bag is fully synthetic, but feels very close to hyde....

Music Suites

Hi all,

I'm curious if anyone would be able to answer a question I have: When did the musical style of the suite start being written for bagpipes? It seems like they're popular now, but I get the...

Re: "Greensleves" pipe tune name?

I'm glad I saw this before replying- I was about to say the same thing. It sounds awful the way it gets played. I know how much people complain about Danny Boy on GHB, but this sounds even more...

Hey all,

I'm putting my set of Atherton MacDougall pipes up for auction. It is mounted in stainless steel and antiqued artificial ivory. This set is the one pictured as pattern 7 on Dave's page...

Re: Hearing Protection

Good choice to wear the earplugs- pipes will most definitely cause hearing damage without them!

You might read this article to get an idea of what the safe listening periods for various decibel...

Re: Chanter Loose in Stock

It's not crazy to use a bit of teflon tape on tuning slides, but the chanter stock??? You're asking for trouble! As Wulls said, it's meant to help with things sliding. It's a great way to help the...

Re: Why do you not compete?

I might be missing it, but I just went through the thread and re-read it- I'm not sure where Bob actually said that pipers who didn't compete weren't actually pipers.

I don't know that you're...

Re: Why do you compete?

Sure. And while I wouldn't fault a professional baseball player for disagreeing with a ref's calls in real-time, in person, I'm not so sure I'd trust a little-leaguer's opinion on the matter... I'm...

These two opinions essentially sum up my thoughts on the matter being discussed. I think there might be some sort of link between the two...

Regarding the core of the original question:

Re: Why do you not compete?

Randy, I think you drastically misunderstood my meaning. I was not implying that the bar is lower for non-competitive work; I wasn't really meaning to engage that aspect of the conversation at all.

Re: Why do you not compete?

Ditto to that. I've always been surprised when people expect their best performance of a competition piece to come out at the time when they're experiencing the most stress, i.e. competing with...

Re: Synthetic to hybrid...

A hybrid or synthetic bag doesn't necessarily use a desiccant system any more than a hyde bag with a zipper... beyond which, having in the past used a Ross mcs system (which I stopped using in favor...

Re: Deleting a tune in Celtic Pipes?

What do you mean by tune file? Are you trying to delete the actual tune (i.e. the CEP/BWW) or are you just trying to erase the music which exists within a given file (without deleting the CEP/BWW...

Thanks for the kind words, Heatherbelle.

You and me both... apparently this is a foolish assumption.

Not all of us are in this to get mired in ultra-traditionalism. This isn't a dress up thing for me; I'm there for the music and I'm...

Re: "Chanter Flat"

I'm inclined to think that this is probably the answer- I can't imagine that a judge is going to get that persnickety about pitch in a GIV competition. And, you know... the judges are typically good...
