Hi folks,

Looking for some insight on possibly selling a 2nd-hand set of pipes. In short, they were the pipes of a friend from a few years back. Great fellow—sadly, he passed away about a year...

Re: 2019 setup, changes?

Agreed, as a reader, I really like coming across threads where things have come full-circle, i.e. original poster lets folks know how they made out, what worked, what didn't.

I'm interested to see...

Re: Learning Flowers of the Forest

I would hazard a guess that a more indepth analysis of said tradition might reveal the following to be the actual, intended decree:

"It's bad luck to PERFORM the tune when there is no military...

Re: Chanter bias?

Well reasoned/stated, as per usual. The individual in this example did seem to possibly be a retailer for his frequently suggested make.

And note, this was merely a recent example of many such...

Re: 2019 setup, changes?

Right. Most of the time, these indepth notes were verbal followup comments immediately after I was done. Probably because they were aiming for clarity. Occurred Id say about 4 times out of many...

2019 setup, changes?

Hi all,

Last year, a fellow had the forethought to kick off a thread where folks could chime in on whether they're planning to make any changes to their setup. I thought this was really cool and...

Re: Moose vs Naill Tube- Observations

Not sure if this was in reference to me ... the two hours I mentioned are my practice sessions. If this wasn't in reference to me, apologies.

Re: Iíve met my threshold and itís 15 degrees

I learned it too ... so did the entirety of that pipe band, I should like to hope. As for "foolhardy" ... me? At 15? Nooooo way. =)

Re: Chanter bias?

Ahh, right. This goes right to the route of my inquiry.

In your example, I'm wondering what it is about your friend's former chanter choice that was supposedly dooming him to not place well? Is...

Re: Iíve met my threshold and itís 15 degrees

Worst for me was a First Night parade in Boston one year with a pipe band. I believe the actual temp was hovering around 0˚F, and wind chill was dropping into the negatives. Poly pipes weren't a...

Re: Moose vs Naill Tube- Observations

Call me nuts ... especially cuz, well, I kind of am ... but when I bought a moose valve, I intended to do just that (i.e., use both the tube trap w/ split stock, and a moose value). Also, please...

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

Definitely cheaper and easy to have done (thumb hole). My smallpipes were a lucky find from a fellow in Alaska who was selling almost precisely what I was going to order from Nate Banton ... an A/D...

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

Does your chanter have tone holes (the two perpendicular holes for low-G)? Mr. MacHarg makes a version that does not, which is cool if one wants to be nifty, and block the end to play staccato. I...

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

To be clear .. mine is Justly tuned, by default .. maybe I goofed when I responded earlier.

What you say makes sense .. if I'm goofing around with tunes in G or C ... I find I needed to shove some...

Re: Gibson pipes

Agreed. Great make. I've owned four sets in my life, so far, and these are one. They were only curbed (for now) when I came across an old set of Hendersons, which is currently my primary set.

But...

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

Hi Barry,

I've had both, and I much prefer (and now routinely use) the back hole for c-natural.

Mostly, I feel the back-hole is far-superior, but of course this can be a matter of taste....

Re: Too much tape

I agree that other steps should be taken before resorting to carving the bottom of the hole to "move it down." Yes, technically that's a solution, but it should be a last resort.

This has been my observation as well. Obviously I'm rather new to this whole arena, so I guess I'm a bit taken aback at how frequently I see/hear all sorts of strong opinions being thrown about...
