Re: Oldest Pipe Bands

Hi Mike,
Glad to see you're getting all this info together. I don't know if it's relevant, but I believe Chet McNeill and Bob Johnson were in the Portland Scottish PB. I believe both of them...

Re: 2019 setup, changes?

No. 1 and only this year for pibroch:
Graham Burley ABW drones he made for me a few years ago, but he made delrin blowpipe and split chanter stocks at my request this year.
Kinnaird Edge drone...

Re: Kinnaird Edge vs Evolution

Playing Edge in two sets. No issues at all. The bridle screw needs very fine adjustments and once dialed in, I run a length of tape around the reed to make sure the screws don't vibrate out of...

Re: Sharpness War

Agree. Currently playing 452-456 hz and it is a different, more satisfying animal.

Re: info on a set of Gillanders & McLeod pipes

Half mounts, even in great conditions are not in heavy demand. Very nice pipes, especially for Bb players, but I'd be surprised you get more than $800 right now. Good luck on the sale.

Re: Opinion on '90s(?) Hardies?

Hardie usually had great wood stock, even in the last days before being bought out. Reaming pipes by a competent maker is no bother, and hand reaming drone bottoms is easy. Unless you want a wee...

Re: An ABW Pipe Chanter Question

Outside fine, inside will drop and dull pitch. Not sure of recovery, so I don't.

Re: Favorite blowstick? And worth it to repair a blowstick?

In Chicago? send to Donaldson or Dunbar for a sleeve repair or to have a replica made. Should a be a pretty quick turnaround time for you. Any standard stick will do in the meantime.

Re: How many actually use Binneas

Robin, I don't think it is really that confusing as to their motives for keeping some stylistic features and dropping others. The turf battles of the early 20th century among the pipers of the day...

Re: Question from a piper

Fashion changes. I started drumming in the mid-70s. Duthart was the standard, but you could tell individual drum corps by their styles. Greats like Turner, Connell, Kirkwood, and Montgomery were...

Re: Who does repairs using Catalin?

Graham Burley in BC can do catalin, but he doesn't "age" it. Just have to be patient and let it oxidize.

Re: Pumkin Spice mounts

I always understood it to mean "New, Old Stock", as in: old but in unused condition.

Re: "B" Flat Set up

What's the chanter? Shaping a modern reed meant for higher pitch to an old chanter will drive you nuts. G1 makes a Bb reed that works well in older Hardie, G&M, and G&C chanters. Expect the hiG to...

Re: How many actually use Binneas

What I've learned from airing MacPherson recordings on my radio show is that he didn't always follow Binneas either. Made me realize, at my advancing age of greyness, what great fun it is to read...

Yes it is. At least the most familiar beginning of the suite. Wonderful work you've done there. Congrats.

Re: Shouldn't there be threads in drone seats??

Oh fer dog's sake, you're not actually tapping a seat, you are using a tap to score the seat. Simply by hand, a 4-cutter tap can be rotated 1/4 turn to score threads down the first 1/4-inch of seat....

Re: Which pipemaker in these vintage photos?

Looks like John Weatherston blowing the chanter. Ask Alistair if it's RG Hardie.

Re: Robertson Identification

Into the 1950s because of the not too drastic convex (bulging) profile. Ringo could narrow the era, but we're only talking about a couple decades, and that's a pretty tight range in pipe dating. ...

Post war blackwood Robertsons with casein drone rings/bushes. Very nice and solid pipe.

Re: Worst venue of 2018...go!

That was frustrating; the announcement stated clearly that the amateur piobaireachd competition would this year be held "at" the host hotel. Show up and the courtyard is chock full of nuts instead...

Worst venue of 2018...go!

Pleasanton Games amateur piobaireachd. 8 leets in a motel entry area next to the valet parking lot, surrounded on two sides by concrete and glass, with pipers too close in all four corners. Motel...
