Re: Any pointers while making my first pc?

Drill you tone holes undersized. This will make them sound flat. You can install the reed and enlarge them incrementally untill you have the pitch you need.

Re: Any pointers while making my first pc?

Pay attention to wall thickness as this will affect pitch. If you are copying a chanter you now use , be sure to tune it with the same reed. I would recommend trying a couple of maple versions...

Re: Howling Tenor Drones

Now that you mention it, we had each tenor working fairly reliably on it's own but the howling would return when trying to start the whole stand. Unfortunately, I don't have many strike-in tips for...

Howling Tenor Drones

A friend of mine just got her first set of pipes. She has McCallums with Ez-Drone reeds. I can't seem to get her tenors to start up without howling. The bass works fine. Both tune fine when up...

Re: Opposite Tuning Effect

My pipes are McCallums and the decreasing pitch is measured with a Korg tuner. These drone reeds are not brand new so I'll check on the bridles. Again, the tenors increase in pitch with increased...

Opposite Tuning Effect

Sorry for the lame title.

I have two bass drone reeds that decrease or flatten in pitch when blowing pressure is increased. I have fiddled with bridles and tuning screws to no avail. They both...

Re: Follow to Nate Banton Post on Gaelic College to teach "Cape Breton Piping"

Could you post a few links to Cape Breton piping. I am not familiar with this style and would like to hear the difference.

Re: Leather bag reuse

Pete,

I have done this for both my smallpipes and my new asturian gaita. I plugged the two tenor holes with plugs I turned on my lathe and widened the bass drone hole to accept the smallpipe...

Re: Proper Pipes - long armed piper

I think bag ergonomics not just size is the key. Different bag brands place the blow-pipe stock differently. I make two tie-in rings on the blow-pipe stocks I make though usually to allow for a...

Bag for a Gaita

I am starting an Asturian Gaita project and will need a bag. Gaitas I've fiddled with seem to have pretty small bags. Does anyone know of a supplier here in the states? I was thinking of adapting...

Re: Hickory vs. African Blackwood

Cocobolo and Mopani are also good choices. Both are related to Blackwood and are very dense, but are more plentiful and thus less expensive. I think Cocobolo is about the prettiest wood out there...

Re: recommendations for a good lathe

I have a Delta 1460 combination wood / metal lathe. It is able to slow down more than the usual wood lathe and has a compound tool rest for metal tools. I really like this lathe. It's about 50-60...

Re: Advice on SSP Case

I use a Sears Craftsman plastic tool box. It protects my smallpipes and has a tray for my pipes stuff. Costs less than $20 and is easy to carry.

Re: flying with bagpipes... What precautions should I take?

I recently traveled with mine to Spain. No problems at all with the pipes but I lost my reed mandrel to the security guys in Amsterdam. I would put your 'tool kit' in the checked bags.

New MG Reeds

Has anyone tried the new MG drone reeds? I believe they are Mark IIs? I think they have longer tongues than before. Thanks in advance.

Re: Asturian Chanter

Update from Spain......After watching two gaita bands playing Bb chanters and then several soloists with C chanters, I decide to make the switch to C. The Bb chanters sounded rather GHB like. ...

I am now here in Spain. I was able to buy an Asturian Chanter from Vicente Suarez, ¨El Pravianu¨. It actually fit my SSP chanter stock so we were able to try it out with my drones. Though it is a...

Re: Asturian Chanter

Yes, the Asturian Chanter has a conical bore. It uses a reed that is much shorter and softer than the ghb reed. I thought it would have a similar blowing pressure to other conical smallpipe...

Asturian Chanter

I'm thinking of having an Asturian chanter made for my smallpipes. I know that they require much lower pressure than the GHB chanter. Any Gaita players out there with advice?

Re: Lapel Mic for Smallpipes

The mic I was using is a Sennheiser eW100. I looked it up online after the performance and was shocked to see $500-$600. I am not sure of the pattern this mic has. Does anyone know of a more...
