Re: Ivory keyboard destroyed

What, exactly, does ivory bring to a set of pipes that would justify calling this vandalism?

Absolutely nothing. No tonal quality. Aesthetics? Other options are available.

Re: Playing older settings of tunes

I think what Dan says is true. It is also universal: judging is an idiosyncratic thing.

I I think the thing that makes it most worrisome about trying to introduce an older settings isn’t that the...

Re: When is a Piobaireachd not a piobaireachd

Keith's is a traditionalist's definition. As such, I would call it a "small pibroch" perspective.

Arrangements are part of the toolkit of composers and musicians alike. But also, there is a...

Re: When is a Piobaireachd not a piobaireachd

Heatherbelle - as I’ve heard it described before, traditional Gaelic music doesn’t so much”tease out” as “journey inward”. I think of it as a rumination within. It wants to distill itself down to a...

Re: When is a Piobaireachd not a piobaireachd

Taking a look at the corpus, I note several genres of pibroch: salutes, gatherings, laments, militia, commemorations, rowing tunes, lullabies, taunts.

Which makes me think of pibroch as music...

Re: Piobaireachd High A

Re: Piobaireachd High A

I've taken to telling judges I play an open high-G for pibroch, as the tonality and stability is increased in modern chanters. I've only ever played closed high-G on the Ian Dall replica chanter,...

Re: Bruce Gandy chanter - reviews?

Beautiful chanter. Warm sound. Small holes, small spacing. Projects well. Using it for solo recording. Together with MacClellan reed, it takes no taping (astonishing; YMMV).

Highly recommended.
