Re: The Universe of Bagpipes?

I believe Oliver had a son, but the son has no interest in Oliver's piping or business doings.

Re: Glenfiddich Piping Championship 2020

I agree with you about the importance of this introduction. When I'm judging I often re-read it over the course of a morning while the competitors tune.

Re: Has pitch topped out?

I think the bands and the chanter makers have been largely responsible for the rise in pitch. The soloists have risen with the bands, though as a whole we've lagged behind a bit. The bands continue...

Re: Constructive Criticism for Pipers

I have to say that the above two statements -- if I'm reading them right -- are quite foreign to me and, I would suggest, to many or most of my colleagues. I'm often asked after a contest how I...

Re: "Wrongly" arranged and misprinted tunes

Big topic this one, but on the subject of the third part of John MacDonald of Glencoe --

I don't have a copy in Willie Lawrie's handwriting, but I have a copy in John MacColl's handwriting,...

Re: Another "pipe identification assistance" thread

Modern pipes aren't my fortÚ, but they look a lot like Hardies, maybe from the late 1980s.

Re: Island Piobaireachd Style

I'm not really sure what island style is either but I would suggest that a lot of "MacPherson" players would contend they play in a "flowing, song-based style" as well. I think the Cameron/MacPherson...

Re: Reed scraping question.

This is true. However, for most people this depends on reed selection and therefore who they get their reeds from. Their idea of "easy-medium" and the reedmaker or retailer's idea of easy-medium...

Re: Reed scraping question.

Most good players I know start with a reed that is a bit strong. If it doesn't get easier after some playing or if it does but is still a bit hard, they will shave it. I use newly-sharp utility...

Re: ABW-Ebony Distinction

Doh -- I meant the difference between ebony and blackwood. Much harder than telling ebony from ivory!

Re: ABW-Ebony Distinction

I don't find colour to be an effective way of telling ebony from ivory. Knowing ebony from ivory is especially difficult if there is a lacquer finish on the pipes. For me it's two things: one is the...

Re: Pipers in the old days

I take it back. This was not William Ross. This was James Campbell, the Queen's Piper after Ross.

Re: Am I really expected to play double d-gracenotes on certain triplets in jigs?

These are most certainly played not only at the highest level, but well below the highest level. Yes, it's hard, but D gracenotes tend to be our weakest gracenote. I needed pages and pages to cover...

Re: Mull of Kintyre - rant

In the original recording the only melody the pipes play is the chorus. The rest of the time they play harmony notes. The pipes are accompaniment. The vocal is the star of the show. It's not really...

This is a fantastic site, Patrick. I use it all the time and recommend it constantly. It's without question the most comprehensive music pipe music index on the planet.

Re: Atherton Pipes - Ross Bag

I use five clamps with any Ross bag I install. There was a time not too long ago when Ross bags were all sold with five clamps -- this was the the way for decades. I still sell all of my Ross bags...

Re: Robertson bagpipes

Hard to tell from the limited pics, but I would say S°ren's set certainly is not Brazilwood. I've only ever had a couple of Brazilwood sets of any kind. African blackwood can have a slight reddish...
