Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

All I know is that in the 70s/80s/90s L&M days I was always playing a big bag.

From time to time I would acquire a vintage set that still had its sheepskin or hide bag on it and I marveled at how...

Re: Reed vs Chanter

Personally for Concert Pitch gigs I switched from a 1960s Hardie to a purpose-built Concert Bb/466 modern chanter.

Mine is by McCallum.

The reason is purely about the reeds. The Hardie was...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

OMG yes! That was the accepted wisdom then.

We all played the biggest L&M bags we could get.

The very PM who had the hard reed theory also played the biggest bag I've ever seen. It was L&M...

Re: Games cancellations

In this area, we have one Games in the books (Queen Mary) and two upcoming ones listed as cancelled (Las Vegas and Costa Mesa).

I just checked the websites of two others, no news of cancellations...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

+1

However I use Gannaway or sheep. No MCS.

Yes back when I started doing this, in the 1970s, everybody here was using the L&M "elkhide" bags. We played them throughout the 80s and even into...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

Reminds me of the Pipe Major here who had a theory about giving his pipers hard reeds: "They're hard enough that nobody can overblow them, and if underblown the chanter just cuts out."

So there...

Re: Worlds Grade 1 tunes

It's why I put together a multi-CD collection that includes every different march played from 1991-2007, each of the 34 Marches appearing only once. Due to Strathspeys and Reels having much less...

Re: Worlds Grade 1 tunes

:thumb:

Sad to say, you're very close to the truth!

The reason I would like to know the post-DVD tunes is that back in 2007 I had compiled a list of all the Marches, all the Strathspeys, and...

Re: The reverse hands challenge

Somewhere there's a video of a small circle of pipers, each with his lower hand on the next piper's chanter!

What I would love to do, in a kitchenpiping contest, is to stand between two pipers...

Re: What the.... ?!

Yes what a thing to think of! Wowza.

Imagine me, an ignorant teenager in a place with no pipers within hundreds of miles, in 1974 (no internet) with the CoP book and a Lawrie practice chanter,...

Re: Favourite chanter pitch

For me the Dave Williams set is still his "new" set!

Because well I remember his old Catalin-mounted Crowley set, that he played with the Rowsome chanter, in his Bothy Band days.

Re: The reverse hands challenge

I can play Scotland The Brave, but really slow.

It's good to do, to remind yourself what it's like for beginners.

Re: Bagpiper Carving Glasgow

Looks like a single chanter, no drone.

I think there are some double-chanter bagpipe carvings in Scotland, I can't remember.

The carved wood piper inside St Giles has two drones, but of...

Re: What the.... ?!

Thing is, you exactly described a standard uilleann pipe ornament.

So if you ever take them up, your fingers will be ready.

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

Or, get a (plain) Gannaway or sheepskin and you won't need moisture control, probably.

Begg has some sheepskin bags now for 112 pounds, and the pound is low now.

I think the culprit of the excess moisture has been identified.

Re: Worlds Grade 1 tunes

Thanks!

That might do the job, maybe I need to figure out how to adjust the filters.

For the 2015 and 2016 Words it only gives one band for each, for the 2017 Worlds it gives a few bands.

Re: I LOVE my bagpipes

Excellent questions!

I do love my pipes.

Said to be Lawries from the 1940s. I'm a Lawrie guy (my first set in 1975 were Lawries and I've owned many Lawries since) so when this set came up for...

Worlds Grade 1 tunes

As long as the Worlds CDs and DVDs were being made it was easy to look up the tunes that were played in the Grade One Finals.

Is there a single place you can look up the tunes from recent years? ...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

I didn't see mention of bag type and whether the drones are wood or plastic.

I had far too much moisture buildup when I tried playing some plastic drones for a while, and I went back to wood.

One of the best things about having a nearly indestructible case like the Pelican is when we're loading a van for a band trip. I don't have to worry about somebody tossing super-heavy junk (like a...

I'm sort of like that. Not that I've kept up with "the latest rage pipe case" but mainly because I've bought and sold quite a few sets of pipes over the years, and oftentimes they come in an old case...

Re: Favourite chanter pitch

Yes Paddy Keenan for many years played a vintage chanter, an original Rowsome I think, with a guitar Low E string shoved up in it.

I was told that it was necessary because the style of reed he...
