Re: Clips of Blackwood Shepherd Chanter

The maker has a list of top level bands that play his chanters, could start there.

Re: First Competition

I don't think it's a very common tune, and most of what I hear at the pc level is Mairis wedding, or maybe barren rocks (I think I played wings). The idea for pc level is for raw beginners to hear...

Re: St. Patrick's Day Rant

Id think that if you polled a hundred people on St Paddys, you'd be hard pressed to find one that knew the difference (at least in Canada, maybe North America).

I played Irish Eyes last night...

Re: Double Gold for J.K. Cairns

You could also try emailing bill livingstone and ask him where he got the music, and if he'd be willing to share.

On the same note, anyone know the first strathspey Gordon Walker plays?

Re: naturals

Don't know if it's relevant, but I have a hard time getting a pibrock high g with my mccallum band chanter (shepherd molded reed). It could just be that it's designed as a band chanter, not a solo...

Re: Do custom pipes make a difference?

I'd be willing to bet though, that when pretty much any maker is getting ready to put custom engraved silver or reclaimed ivory (or any top-end embellishment material) on a set of pipes, those pipes...

Re: Making "The Purchase" soon

I can see how what I said would be read as disparaging. Not my intention. If they were no good, they wouldn't be the best selling bagpipes right now.

I completely agree with what you've said!

Re: Making "The Purchase" soon

This is such a loaded question, pretty much everyone will recommend you get the make of pipes they're currently playing (I'll throw my hat in for MacPhersons). Bottom line, McCallums are good pipes,...

WTB: Music Books

Hi, just thought I'd put a post on here looking for music books. Let me know what you have and what price you'd like.

Specifically interested in the Piobaireached Society Manuscripts, I'd like...

Re: Distance between boards?

That's on the steward, and there's no excuse for it.

We routinely get highland dancers running through the solo areas, just one more thing to pay attention to.

WTB: Bass Drum Heads

Looking for some used, cheap (or free) bass drum heads. Prefer white with no decals.

They won't be played, just displayed.

New product: "DoubleGeek" reed knife

I didn't take it that way at all.

I've heard lots of pipers complain that they're reed is too hard, but never a one complain that they don't practice enough. :)

Seconds/Harmonies in grade IV/V competitions

Best possible advice. Grade one bands can do those strong, powerful harmonies because they're grade one bands and can tune and play accordingly.

Help with tune names

Jack Daniels reel, that's one for sure. Thanks!

I think the first tune is one that's been mangled a bit with two different time signatures. I'm pretty sure it's not kelsae brig, Ill recognize the...

New product: "DoubleGeek" reed knife

Totally agree, but the piper has to do their bit as well, if you never play it, it's never going to break in. So giving someone a reed that's the perfect strength for them when it's right out of the...

Re: New product: "DoubleGeek" reed knife

You're right, it did horrify me! I had a piper who did this constantly to make her reeds easier (instead of maybe playing them once in a while). Her reeds lasted a fraction of the time as everyone...

Wood vs Plastic Practice Chanter

The cane reed absolutely makes a difference in both tone and volume. With mine, I can actually vary the volume with my blowing, which is handy at the band table. The trade off is that it takes...

Re: Wood vs Plastic Practice Chanter

I don't know that there's a measurable difference in sound, but I just made the change and I prefer my wooden chanter over the plastic one. Now I just need to get my cane reed running in it.
