Head shakers

Some of us in our band were chatting the other evening waiting for our time to play in a gig and a couple of people mentioned those times when non-pipers say really head shaking things. For...

Re: Celtic multi-instrumentalists?

One of the bands in which I play does traditional Celtic music plus old-time Appalachian tunes. We host a monthly Celtic jam; in that I play my SSP when it's my turn and I feel like it or someone...

Re: Cataract surgery and piping

I had mine done four years ago. While the ophthalmologist said I could play right away, I chose to wait a few weeks (four, to be exact) after the second eye was done just to be on the safe side. I...

Re: Peaks and valleys of the learning process

Practice is a mysterious thing and it's a wise person who understands how to practice well. I think most good pipers have found a strategy that works for them. It can be helpful sometimes, on those...

Re: Colin Ross RIP

What an absolutely lovely tribute to him, Rob!! That's one of the treasures of our music that it can be such an expressive outlet when mere words fail us. Thanks for sharing your tune.

Re: Retrospective apology?

I used to keep a good, broken in reed set aside for just such occasions but have been lax on that lately. Obviously I need to renew that habit. I think I also need to be less concerned about having...

Re: Retrospective apology?

Thanks, all, for the great suggestions!! I did end up contacting them and fessing up. You were right, angusloch, they said it was great. I do keep spare reeds and also have a Bb chanter with...

Re: retrospective apology?

Thanks for the input!! I am not a graded piper and, while I know about some troubleshooting with my pipes, I'm not that well versed in what all can go wrong. I do have extra reeds though it didn't...

Retrospective apology?

I was hired to play for a St. Patrick's Day party a couple of weeks ago, which was a grand time!! I had been asked to play for a half hour prior to the beginning of the meal, just background music. ...

Re: What's your least favorite type of gig?

I chose "corporate" though some of those are OK, too. I'm doing a second year playing for a Republican Party St. Patty's party. As a green party person, I felt some trepidation last year but it was...

Re: Pipe band map (lower 48)

Very interesting!! Just what this cartophile adores. :thumb: I know there are more groups than are shown, since our band in Fargo, ND, isn't shown. We don't have a website, though, so what can one...

Re: Ear protection recommendations for the band circle

here's another vote for the custom ear plugs. They work very well and are perfectly comfortable, something I have not found with other OTC ear plugs.
While they are pricey, they fit perfectly and...

Re: Old Dogs... New Tricks?

Some of our passions last a life time and others have their end point. It's sad to see but it's heartening to know you do have another wonderful musical outlet. Blessings to you!!

Re: when to say farewell....

Yes, do keep on playing!! You still have a lot to offer the group. A few years ago a member of ours was diagnosed with a rare, progressive debilitating muscle disease. She continued to play as...

Re: Wet Blowing

That is true. My first pipe instructor admitted to being a very dry blower so he never had issues with moisture. I, on the other hand, am wet and have a band mate who is even wetter than I. I do...

Re: Old Dogs... New Tricks?

This would be very helpful for those of us rapidly approaching geezerdom or who are already there!! I feel so sad hearing people say they are too old to do something they love.

Re: Pipes, A Serious Commitment…The Grumbles of a Newbie

There is a wide range of attitudes toward any instrument. Some do require greater financial output than others and we each have a choice of putting in as much work as we are willing to give to...

Re: Kilt, pleat to Sett or Stripe?

Being not at all military, I much prefer pleating to the sett. It shows all the colors in the tartan in a pleasing balance. Plus some of the ways tartans can be pleated to the stripe might set off...

Re: Unusual bag/cord covers?

One of my bandmates made a bag cover that is supposed to resemble a golden retriever. While I doubt it would do well at Westminster, it is rather cute. I'd like a bag cover in denim but first I...

Re: Leading a procession

I, too, scan the assemblage for elderly or those with obvious mobility challenges and pace myself accordingly, though I do try for a good, stately walk. Usually I needn't go far and, if sensible, I...

Re: Comfortable Formal Marching Shoes

That brings up the questions: are these all available in women's sizes? I don't know what brand of ghillies our band ordered years ago; they are comfortable enough when marching but not so great for...

Re: Trigger finger surgery

Yes, good luck with your surgery, Jim!! It's good to hear success stories and know that hand issues don't necessarily toll the death knell to our piping. It will be interesting to see in the future...
