Here is a set of Gibson 3-drone smallpipes in A that I've brought up to top condition. They are cocobolo with brass mounts. All reeds have been replaced--drone reeds with plastic single-bladed...

Re: Neophyte Questions About Gibson Fireside Pipes

I'll second the Hamon reeds. I have the Gibson Ceilidh pipes, very similar to the firesides. The double-bladed reeds were very squirrely and you'll be happier with Seth's reeds. Regarding starting...

Re: New to SP, reeds shutdown easily issues.

I'll second that the Gibson plastic double-bladed reeds are horrible. But I think the pipes are of fine quality. Like Rich, I swapped out my drone reeds for Seth Hamon single-bladed ones and have...

Re: Uilleann Pipe Makers - Why solo?

Any toymakers want to chime in here? Not being an instrument maker I couldn't say, but I'd imagine that design, testing, fabrication, and crafting are all on a graduated scale and the complexity of...

Re: Bag rejuvenation

Good news--my 27-year old bag is back to life! I followed el gaitero's advice to rinse with warm water and drip dry, then I sloshed in a half bottle of warm Airtight seasoning and the bag was...

Re: Uilleann Pipe Makers - Why solo?

Hi Rob,

All great points but based solely on this logic, each craft would have to be relearned every single generation. Surely all pipemakers aren't all self-taught? I've also been baffled by...

Re: Bag rejuvenation

Glad to hear my bag might still have some life left. I'll order up some Airtight and try to revive it. I was worried I was horribly out of playing shape!

Bag rejuvenation

I haven't been playing my GHB much as I've switched over to smallpipes. At most I play once or twice a year. This week I got out the big pipes and found I could hardly keep the bag inflated to play....

Re: Hamon reeds in Firesides

I don't know if they have a type, it's the custom ones he makes for Ceilidh and Fireside pipes. Nice reeds and steady!

Re: Hamon reeds in Firesides

Glad it got sorted. Those double-bladed Gibson drone reeds are really horrible and make you think you've regressed years in your playing ability. Out of curiousity, are the reed seats in your...

Re: NSP carrying case?

Try this aluminum case from Harbor Freight. It's $24, durable, and the right size. I have one of these for my Scottish smallpipes and it fits great--I only have to take the top section off the base...

Re: Gibson Fireside vs Gibson Ceilidh

That's the nice thing about using a single-bladed drone reed--you can just shut them off with a tap of the finger on the drone end, just like GHBs. It's fun to be able to turn on drones mid-tune...

Re: Gibson Fireside vs Gibson Ceilidh

I agree. I sure hope someone from Gibson monitors these posts. They are sabotaging their great instrument with some really crappy reeds, bumping them down into novelty/toy category when they can...

Re: Gibson Fireside vs Gibson Ceilidh

[sigh] I'd love to see the results from a blind test of smallpipes. Let's get a half dozen sets of ABW smallpipes, all reeded as best and close as possible, played by the same person, and we'll see...

Re: Gibson Fireside vs Gibson Ceilidh

I made the move from GHB to Gibson Ceilidh pipes and I can say that the reed setup is a HUGE part of the equation. I think a poorly-reeded set of Moore bellows-driven smallpipes would sound much...

Re: Smallpipes and humidity fluctuation

All good thoughts on the reeds but I can say the drone reed issues definitely came from bridle placement and hyper-sensitivity. I have noticed my cane chanter reed sharpens a bit with playing but...

Re: Smallpipes and humidity fluctuation

Paul,

I've got a Bannatyne bag so there's no seasoning at all to grease up my reeds.

I spent last night readjusting my bass drone reed which decided to play a note higher than normal then...

Re: Smallpipes and humidity fluctuation

I initially thought cane would actually more susceptible to humidity changes but my chanter reed has been surprisingly forgiving. So with cane drone reeds they won't have problems swinging from dry...

Smallpipes and humidity fluctuation

I have the pleasure of living in San Diego, a semi-arid desert climate that goes right down to the sea. My bellows-blown smallpipes aren't loving the variety in humidity levels, however. Further...

Re: Synthetic drone reeds, or cane, and why?

When I first started playing the GHB I had cane drone reeds. Trying to get the chanter in tune, the drone reeds in tune, learning how to blow, squeeze, and play the chanter, it was like keeping...

Re: How can I deal with the WAIT?!

Congrats on the pipes! Simon's work is top-notch and you're lucky to be playing such a well-crafted set. It took me a couple weeks to be up to playing with the bellows steadily and I found it easy...

Re: Tired of squeaky/squawky plastic SP chanter reed

Just to be clear, I switched to playing with bellows a few months ago, on some beautiful Hope bellows. I wouldn't consider mouth-blowing on a cane reed. So I think firesides with cane would mean...

Cane reed success!

I just got a cane SSP chanter reed from Bill Carr yesterday and am really impressed. It took about five minutes to unwrap some hemp to seat the reed deeper to get the top and bottom A in tune. Some...
