Re: Cleaning up old pipes?

There are tons of vintage ivory sets out there with the unmistakable stains of old, sticky, leather bags on the mounts -- the stains are indeed permanent but add character and are part of the history...

Re: ABW-Ebony Distinction

Lot's of great opinions here. I have a couple of sets of ebony pipes (1 (http://www.lockyphoto.com/bagpipeecology/?page_id=1296), 2 (http://www.lockyphoto.com/bagpipeecology/?page_id=1697)), one of...

Re: Poly pipes.... Opinions

Thanks, Greenpipe! IMHO, one cannot go wrong with a set of 'plastic' or 'poly'
pipes; whether your main set or for foul weather/travel (hot trunk, sub-zero parades anyone?), most people would not...

Re: How many sets do you own?

Too many! But what the heck, they are in semi-regular rotation and as long as they are out of the way of my wife, I'm good. In descending order of date:

2016: Colin Kyo Blackwood Engraved Silver...

Re: Experience with Source Bagpipes

While I did not end up purchasing a set from Ross at Source Bagpipes, I had an excellent experience dealing with him. He provided excellent communication, even sending me sound files of the pipes I...

Sussexpipes, I was going to ask you how you got your pipes back but noticed you posted it elsewhere -- congrats!

Re: Lee and Sons Bagpipes

I had the privilege of a front row concert by Jack a few months back and thoroughly enjoyed the tone of his Lee and Sons pipes and, of course, his incredible playing and banter. IMHO, these Lee and...

You need to get ahead of that right off the bat and list what tunes you deem appropriate! :thumb:

Re: Orig or restored?

I've had experience with but a few sets of vintage pipes, and in all cases but one I elected to just manually clean the beading and combing, polish any metal, oil the heck out of them, then liberally...

Re: Dunbar PC I.D.

Hi Scott,

The internal diameter of the top of my Dunbar Millenium is 0.6215 inches. I don't have the water trap with mine and have only ever used those expanding fibre O-rings for moisture...

Re: Vintage Lawrie Sporran, Patent No 174788, Manufacturer

Great sleuthing and image! That pierced cantle is definitely my favourite and why I often wear the sporran I posted below -- it seems to add depth to the look.

Yes, that ubiquitous hunting...

Re: Vintage Lawrie Sporran, Patent No 174788, Manufacturer

That is a nice sporran, and the marking interesting, though the fur may be baby seal and perhaps less desirable to some. Those silver cantles are top notch and much nicer than the nickel versions we...

Re: Best Chanter and Drone Tuner for Band?

After following all of the hubbub on the Braw tuner I decided to give it a try; wow, some interesting features, including the tracking of chanter and drone tuning. That in itself helps to streamline...

Re: Shouldn't there be threads in drone seats??

3D Piper has it right...

My 2011 poly Dunbars came with threaded lower joints, as did my WWI ebony Hendersons, the latter a nicely done job many years after the pipes were turned. Both sets are a...

Re: Just purchased Grainger & Campbell bagpipes

LOL, funny how things go wrt terminology -- I say we take back the term cocus wood (or cocuswood)!

I do know about your pipes, Nate, and will wholeheartedly agree that the tone of cocus wood...

Re: Just purchased Grainger & Campbell bagpipes

Cocus wood is not really a helpful term, as the wood used in the pipes in question is very likely East Indian Rosewood, Dalbergia latifolia, though sometimes marketed as cocus wood. True cocus wood...

Re: Pipe Material ID

Hello Neighbour,

Norm certainly seems to have experimented with a number of materials, wood included. To my eyes these pipes sure look like they're made from Macassar ebony, which some refer to as...

Re: yet another pipe ID

Yes, no argument that button-mounted pipes are an early design, probably the earliest! But it is important to discriminate between wood-mounted and button-mounted. Of course, both are made from wood...

Re: Chanters & Pitch @ 2018 World Pipe Band Championships

Well, both performances with a Shepherd chanter were 1 Hz apart (+ was during solo), so you're likely right. No muss, no fuss, one set-up does make sense.
