MedicDrummer is bang on here. It's best to stick to Premier, Pearl or Andante.

They are all made specifically for Pipe Band Drumming. The other "marching drums" are not suited to our pipe band...

Yes BigDog, I feel that is the best way to guage how far you can take the head. You can then work backwards from there and apply appropriate tension so that you get the desired pitch for the length...
