Re: Why are some better than others ?

I would think a very large component of that independence is down to practicing it. And top-tier violinists would have thousands of hours of practice. As they say, "neurons that fire together wire...

Re: Moose Valve question

Depends on the split stock I suppose. I have two split stocks with tube traps and moose valves in the top halves of both. The moose valve catches the majority of the liquid and I can just tip the...

Re: Air Efficiency Problems

dsb0628 makes a good suggestion. I think even before adjusting the drone reeds though, you might start with some more basic checks.

The way you describe it -- not being able to put air in fast...

Re: Hemping stock joints

The adjustable hand reamer is what I've used. Takes care of out-of-round and tapered. The secret is to remove the absolute minimum amount of wood necessary, and as little each pass as you possibly...

Re: Hemping stock joints

That's the exact condition I was trying to describe above with my Athertons. Not throwing shade on Dave; wood is an organic material that changes with the environment.

Like Toxpert mentions, if...

Re: Hemping stock joints

My personal experience is with 1920s Robertsons, 1955 Hendersons, 1960s G&Cs, 19??s Kintails, and 2014 Athertons (bought new from Dave). All had tuning chambers out to a greater or lesser degree....

Re: Hemping stock joints

Keep in mind too that it's a lot more difficult to get a hemping job that's loose enough to tune easily but tight enough to not slip if your tuning chambers are tapered or out of round. This happens...

Re: The use of Danish Oil in maintaining

Is Doctor's still around? All I'm finding from various places online is little bottles (larger ones are sold out) and emails to Doctor's Products (the company) go unanswered. Have they gone under?

Re: First Exposure to Piping/Drumming

I was at a flea market when I was a little kid and saw a set of pipes (probably Pakistani, probably non-functional "baby" pipes) in a booth. Later in the day my mom asked me if I'd like anything...

I just edited a post I made and noticed the edit timestamp is about 30 min ahead of my timezone (EDT). 30 min? What timezone is 30 min ahead of EDT?

Re: Bagpipe prices c1950

Can't speak to 1950s but I know my folks paid the current equivalent of about $2000 for a set of ca. 1960s G&C frankenpipes (nickel and catalin) in the summer of 1983. Thanks, Harvey.

Re: What's all this flap about flapper valves?

I play a Moose valve in a split stock with a tube trap. I pour off from the Moose valve every set or three (it catches most of the liquid), and dump the tube trap at the end of the session. There's...

Re: Kintail gone or not?

I've a set of older Kintails (vintage unknown, probably 1980s or early 1990s?) that I picked up at an estate sale. They're awful. They had problems with ferrules falling off etc but I'll give them...

Re: Choice of pipe music engraving software?

Try http://moinejf.free.fr/js/edit-1.xhtml for simple typesetting. It's not full-featured though.
