Re: Blair Digital Bagpipes - Update

Sounds fantastic...the time when this sort of thing is incorporated into a real set of Pipes is not far off...with an attached, quality speaker..mark my words.

Re: World Piping Championships

The interest in these things seems to waning, at least here in the US...I can remember the day when one would eagerly await the latest World's CD or cassette..even though it would be replete with...

Re: David Naill solo blackwood chanters - Any good?

I've also found the ABW Naill to be overly sensitive to temperature change..the wood needs to be warmed up to reach peak efficiency..doesn't like cold temps and will sound flat as can be when played...

Re: Who makes this reed?

From what I've heard Bob Shepherd say, the B flat reeds were just ones that sounded flatter off the board..I like the idea of playing B flat chanters in competition, the Shepherd Orchestral has been...

Re: David Naill solo blackwood chanters - Any good?

The Naill poly band chanter is a bit of an outlier...only knew of one band that played them and they have since moved on from them..still a good chanter but can be finicky to reed up as are the solo...

Re: Does different price mean different quality?

I just don't believe that a set of plain Pipes gets the same wood as the top of the line model...no matter what the maker says publicly...would you expect them to say differently?...smarten up.

Re: New video/exercise sheet for learning Heavy D throws

Exactly...I understand the preference of some players for some situations, but there's nothing quite like the sound of a proper heavy D throw..especially with a bit of style and flair attached.

Re: Hardie Infinity chanters

I often wonder if some of these folks who get stuff sent to them would actually post a negative review...if so, I'd like to see one.

Re: New video/exercise sheet for learning Heavy D throws

Too many modern era Pipers play that ghastly light D throw...as Pipe Major Angus would say..."there canna be a throw on D, without low G."

Re: Picking the right reed

Don't get hung up on the the terms easy, medium, hard etc...find and select a reed that vibrates freely regardless of strength..when you blow it in your mouth you can sense the level of vibration...

Re: D. MacPherson pipes

Always seems like over all the years here on this site that whenever someone can't reach a vendor or maker the answer always comes back that they are traveling...as if email is not possible outside...

Re: Any Off & Away to Normandy This Year?

Was there with Pipes on the 50th..no kit..pitched a tent as hotels were extortionate..met up with some local French Pipers..it was a wonderful experience...talked with American, British and German...

Re: Identifying a set of pipes - Pakistani or not?

To my eye, the metalwork is the dead giveaway..also the faint chipping..gun to my head?..Pakistani.

Re: Reeding a 440 Maclellen chanter

Heard Bob Shepherd say in a video that it was just regular batch reeds that were flatter after all of the manufacturing had been completed..nothing more scientific than that!

Re: Molded reeds going the way of the Dodo?

I've never cared for ridge cuts..they sound chirpy on gracings and lack depth..but I get why bands go for them..they require less skill to get an in tune high A..I can always tell if a band is...

Re: Surefire Synthetic chanter reed

These plastic reeds will never be any good unless they make a dedicated chanter for them..playing them in chanters meant for cane reeds is folly.
