Re: Searching for tunes with a high B note

The Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp by the late great Gerry Holland is another fine tune.

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

This thread reminds me of the following quote:

Re: Searching for tunes with a high B note

Come by the Hills is another beautiful slow air that just doesn't sound right without the high B.

Re: C natural Key or Back hole on chanter which is better?

Hi Barry,

I am just catching up on this thread and have to add my vote to the thumb hole alternative. I have been playing a Nate Banton (A-, C-, D-SSP) for about the last ten years. I have the...

Re: Your own funeral

This guy brought new meaning to a wake https://www.nola.com/music/index.ssf/2012/07/uncle_lionel_batiste_gets_send.html

Now if only we could figure out how to keep drones steady in the afterlife....

Re: Teachers and diaphragm vibrato

Pick a finger 2 or 3 holes further down the chanter than the highest open hole (the note you are playing) then raise and lower that finger to open and close the hole. It works better on some notes...

Re: Teachers and diaphragm vibrato

I agree that that sounds great but do we know that Neil was actually doing that intentionally? I only hear it on some notes, which may be intentional but also has me wondering if what we are hearing...

Re: Transposing Help

Coincidentally, I just went through this exercise with the exact same tune (The Log Driver's) last week. It really doesn't fit Scottish pipes but you can get close by transposing the first part (3...

Re: Music for Pipes and other instruments

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your thoughts and that very cool link. I think you confirmed what I suspected, that unison (or octave) playing is 95+% of what is available out there. A full ceilidh band...

Re: Music for Pipes and other instruments

Hi John,

Thanks for those leads. Playing pipe tunes with fiddlers is good but I get the sense they feel a little hobbled playing only on their A and E strings. I was hoping against the odds that...

Re: Over thinking the movements

The only thing I can think of to suggest is having him repeatedly listen to a recording of the tune, slowed down enough to hear the embellishments but not so much that the melody and rhythm are hard...

Re: Music for Pipes and other instruments

Hi Adam,

Thanks for these leads. I have the Orange Book and I agree that the chords are a great addition to a fine little collection. I will look into Matt Seattle's new book and some of the...

Music for Pipes and other instruments

Hi,

I am guessing this is a long shot but has anyone run into any published collections of music arranged for multiple instrument voices including pipes? SSP and fiddle is what I am really...

Re: Do any museum specimens or other old pipes have a baritone drone?

Thanks for the info Barry. I'm currently imagining the sound of GHB against D-chord drones filling the moisture laden air over the beach and up into the deep Meat Cove (outside blackfly season or...

Re: Do any museum specimens or other old pipes have a baritone drone?

That is interesting Barry. Could you share who the piper was and which settlement in CB? (not that it's particularly relevant to this discussion; I'm just curious).

Given the preponderance of...

Re: G Major (not G mixolydian) Smallpipe chanter

Hi Patrick,

The chanter sounds great. Your tune collections have grown since I last looked. Given that 'tis the season, you might consider adding "Silent Night" to your low F# collection and...

Did you mean Oft in the Stilly Night? It's a great tune.

Re: Playing G major tunes on the smallpipes

Hi Michael,

The easiest drone to get a drone to G is likely on your tenor A drone. The physical amount of extension you need will be smaller compared to the bass. If you cant extend the top far...

Re: Playing G major tunes on the smallpipes

Hi Michael,

I have been thinking a bit more about your question. The solution to G tuning on my pipes was to sharpen the Gs to -4cents, this made all the other note adjustments relatively minor...

Re: Playing G major tunes on the smallpipes

Hi Michael,

Other than the C-nat, it helps if you can sharpen your Gs to -4cents from ET and flatten your B and E a bit to bring them into tune with G drones. G and D drones seem to work the...

I'm no expert on Gibson's pipes but since there are no serious responses here yet :):thumb:, I offer the following.

The theoretical advantages of having your drones in a common stock are as...

Re: Slurring or Tonguing

If you cant stop your chanter, you can sometimes simulate the effect by playing the drone note on the chanter. This has the effect of making the note sort of disappear in the drones. But other than...
