Re: Solo chanters/reeds

Re: Reeding a Dunbar elite II pipe chanter

My new Dunbar Elite II blackwood chanter just arrived in the mail. The first reed I put in it (a Megarity) seems to work fine. It tunes a bit flatter in the Elite II than it did in my McCallum Mk2...

Re: 3-Corner File for Chanter Reed Mods???

Thanks, Colin. And a lot cheaper than the ones I found. With the savings, maybe I'll buy myself some MacLellan reeds! Which reminds me: I've never used straight-cut reeds. Is there any advantage...

Re: 3-Corner File for Chanter Reed Mods???

Yes, although I have trouble finding an emery board narrow enough to suit me. The advantage of the file mentioned in this thread is that you can buy one (x-slim or xx-slim, triangular) that has a...

Re: 3-Corner File for Chanter Reed Mods???

You're fortunate. Sadly, that hasn't been my experience. All too often when I buy 10 reeds, I find that only a couple of them meet my needs right out of the box. The remaining 8 or so have problems....

Returning once again to the ever-fascinating topic of how to make your chanter reed easier to blow, in “The Complete Piper’s Handbook” Pipe Major Brett Tidswell states that “I prefer to use a...

Re: Mccallum vs. Wallace

I've had no experience with Wallace pipes, but I've known many people who play MacCallums and I've never heard anyone express dissatisfaction with them. People who stay with piping for the long haul...

Re: Playing only 2 drones: acceptable?

Andrew: I quite agree. And for what it's worth, my first instructor wouldn't let me play in public until I could blow all three drones.

Re: Playing only 2 drones: acceptable?

I had the same experience! In the depths of my frustration, I told myself "That's like a violinist saying "I'm only playing three strings. That fourth string is too hard, so forget it." Not quite the...

What does everyone think of Grade 4 solo pipers playing only two drones in solo competition? Is it acceptable?

In my humble opinion, if a competitor plays only two drones, judges should reflect...
