Try putting a rubber around the blades. This makes the reed quieter. Move the rubber up and down to adjust it to your needs.

I'm using MacLellan easy reeds in my McCallum chanter. Very good reeds. He has also senior reeds which are easier. Contact him and you will get a reed for your needs. Homepage is...

I recently bought a practice chanter stamped RG Hardie Glasgow. The mouthpiece is
plastic and the ferrule/sole seems to be made from a kind of plastic (not ivory) which turned yellow...

In my pre 1920 lawries (made from brazilian kingwood) I used canning higher pitched reeds. The bass was custom made (even higher pitched) with the poly tongue. Nice match for the mellow sounding...

Are you sure with the screw all the way in? Should It not be the other way, all the way out? In my kinnaird bass drone I can see the screw. Hope it's clear what I mean.
