Re: Who'd have thought… (Squealing drones0

Hey, the bag was cheap and gets the job done, just use the right cover and you're set.

Interesting subject here. Shows how much each part of the instrument makes up the whole.

Re: Struggling with finger placement

Late to this thread, but one thing to remember is not all Practice Chanters feel the same.

My best one is a long PC with which the holes are easier to feel -- the holes themselves are slightly...

Re: Peaks and valleys of the learning process

I've found that for fingering issues, more time with the PC seems to help, where I can slow down the movements, work on phrases, etc.

It also helps if you like the sound of the PC you're...

Re: Low G won't sharpen

Does it actually sound flat, or merely 'tune' flat on the tuner?

Re: Problems with High A?

RE: flat high A: I recall reading on here a few years ago that in the 70's and earlier a lot of pros tuned the high A a hair flat to make it stand out from the drones, because of its lower volume.

Re: Bass drone goes out of tune quickly

The first thing I'd check is the hemping on the bass drone.

After that, I'll let the others here who are acquainted with your brands of drones give better advice. But a leaky joint on a drone can...

Re: "Aha" moments that propelled your playing forward

The main "aha" moment for me probably was when I started playing again, after a 15 or so year break.

I began to hear the music differently, especially the dynamics of playing a tune and 'making it...

Re: Practice Chanter Recommendations

At piping college years ago, one guy showed us how he quieted his PC -- he used rubber bands of some type around the base of the blades on the reed -- sort of like the dental band suggestion above....

Re: Hardie Infinity chanters

In the pic above, the Henderson is shaped much like the 80's Hardie I've got. The lower notes are a bit lower on the chanter than my other chanter. I actually prefer it that way, for some reason.

Re: Problem going from E to low A

The only time I've heard a "pfffft" before a Low A sounded was when the reed was too hard, or otherwise hadn't been broken in yet.

But being that we really are just going by a short description of...

Re: The end of the world as we know it...really?

I have been out of the competition scene for over two decades.

When I took the pipes back up over a year ago, I looked into local bands, and found there are less of them than there were in the...

Re: Tunes with Great Stories Behind Them?

Some of the WW1 tunes have stories behind them -- some were written in the trenches by guys who were at the Somme and the like. Some tunes like Road To The Isles were played at Normandy, which gives...

Re: I hate my bagpipes

I don't hate my pipes, but have had issues with reeds from time to time.

It's just a matter of figuring out how to get them consistent, and obviously some brands of reeds are going to work better...

Re: Pipe chanter reeds

If the original post is serious, I would put the cane reed in the pipe chanter, and stop the drones (take them out of the stocks and replace with stoppers), and break in the reed that way.

Pipe...

Re: Surefire Synthetic chanter reed

I have experience with another brand of synthetic chanter reeds, and the pitch doesn't alter during warm up but the playability does slightly -- about 5 minutes in it eases a hair and takes a bit...

Re: Practice Chanter Reeds

I use Warnock PC reeds, never had one cut out from wetness. But periodically taking the PC apart (every 15 minutes or whatever), taking a paper towel to the inside of the top (to sop up extra...

Re: Pinkie Finger Down for Quick C?

I would aim for the one (closed C) and not sweat the other (open C), unless you're in a band where the PM is going to rap your knuckles for "false fingering".

I remember hearing my PM tell me...

Re: Controlling nerves

Whatever the issue may be (I think most beginners at piping, or playing in a pipe band deal with it from time to time), it definitely is not age.

I would try to nail down one of the band's tunes...

Re: Exercise sheets - good or bad?

When I was in a pipe band years ago some of the best pipers swore by them, using Logan's exercises as an example.

I know that such exercises were a staple of piano lessons when I was a kid.... I...

Re: Chanter hemping

Wax. Lots of wax on the hemp.

And on days it seems looser than usual, an extra winding or two of waxed hemp helps. That extra winding can be pulled away if needed during or before next use.

Re: Cracked Blowpipe Stock

I made a typo in my post here....

I meant outside drone stock, not "outside chanter stock."

Woops.

Re: Cracked Blowpipe Stock

Worse comes to worse, use some liquid super glue, keep the stock as a potential replacement.

I have used liquid super glue on hairline cracks (one in the blowpipe, and one on the outside chanter...
