Re: Early Henderson bore sizes

Assuming you've done the easy stuff (maintenance, trying different reeds, etc), I'd strongly suggest finding a pipe maker willing to make a project of working with you on this set. There are lots of...

Re: Getting back the saddle!

This subject makes me irrationally angry, mostly because it keeps coming up...

NOBODY SHOULD PLAY A REED THAT'S TOO HARD FOR THEM. Period. Nobody who inflicts a too-hard reed on their students...

Re: Hole-spacing whistle vs. GHB

Exactly what Callum said. I can remember being a young piper and finding it stressful to switch between band and solo chanters, and worrying about being to produce exactly the execution that I wanted...

Re: Takeaway tips from botched gigs?

Don't take gigs that you don't really want to do. You'll resent the preparation.

When you do perform, be as prepared as you can possibly be. That means knowing yourself and your instrument well...

Re: Why is it still ivory that's No.1?

Just comes down to personal preference. There are some really nice-looking artificial ivories being used right now. I don't tend to like the ones that look very obviously like plastic. I have a...

Re: How to Obtain Good Chanter Reeds

It's important to learn to adjust reeds. Highland pipe reeds are not made to suit a particular chanter and can only approximate the end-user's blowing pressure. It's not reasonable to expect that all...

Re: Gordon Walker

Some of us have young students, some of us have children who play, some of us play in bands with kids. I think discussing how to deal with situations like this is entirely on-topic, as long as the...

Re: Solo Competition Breakdown

I can't think of any specific instances that stand out. Just the usual stupid stuff: letting my mind wander, resulting in blooters, forgetting which tune was selected in an MSR or S/R, missing a...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

I think there are more b-flat chanters on the market now because the ever-higher pitches of competition chanters have created a demand for a separate product that can be played with other...

Re: Hardie or MacDougal

No. Some did and some didn't. It's not an exclusively MacDougall characteristic, either.

Re: Most frequent/overplayed tunes for solo competitions

This year's was particularly bad. I think the drive to play 6 or 8-parted tunes is contributing to a lot of the duplication. Particularly in the reels, there just aren't that many of them that are...

Re: "B" Flat Set up

Lots of pipers want to play with other instrumentalists, and there are plenty of gigs out there for those who can.

Competition pitches have reached a point where it's impractical to have one...

Re: Worlds - filling and test their bags

I don't know why it's necessary to make all kinds of noise to ensure that your bag is adequately inflated. *shrug*

I'm sure it varies from association to association, but in mine (EUSPBA), there...

Re: Drone Volume in Old Recordings

We don't have any recordings of Bob Brown's sound that are really accurate enough to let us try to reproduce it. Furthermore, for most of the history of recorded sound, recordings have been mastered...

Re: Was there a rise in chanter pitch at the Worlds this year?

It was cold and rainy on Friday, and cool on Saturday, with periods of rain. Nobody sets out to be the highest or lowest-pitched band on the field; the conditions have a lot of influence.

Re: To pinch or not to pinch.....

I find that some makers use harder cane than others. On those reeds, pinching them doesn't accomplish very much. On reeds that are a little softer, it can make the blowing-in process a bit easier....

Re: Pierced Pipers?

That's basically a literature review (no original research) and some of what's cited is very out of date. Modern tattoo inks and practices are NOT what they were in decades past, and many states DO...

Re: Pierced Pipers?

Interesting thread. I have several tattoos, but only one that's just barely visible above the top of my sock if I don't pull my hose all the way up. I've never given it any thought. If I was tattooed...

Re: Bass drone goes out of tune quickly

Does the Selbie bass reed that came with the set of reeds stay in tune?

When you mix reedmakers between tenor and bass, it's critical to get everything adjusted right. If your bass reed is set to...

Re: Hugh MacCallum on Practicing

Right on. I know plenty of people who are open-level practice chanter players, but have significant issues on bagpipes, either with sound or technique. They're two different instruments. The practice...

Re: Band reeds - what do you use?

With the right reed, you can get a Mk2 to 480-482 without any real difficulty. Higher than that, and you're probably opening up holes.

Re: OK, Who Knew?

Good eye. The set was made by Jerry Gibson, but it is not a stock Gibson. It's a copy of a very old Lawrie that was too damaged to repair. Jerry Gibson duplicated its dimensions and transferred the...

I knew, but I live and grew up in the DC area. Yes, he's a very good player. He played in the Denny & Dunipace/Scottish and Irish Imports Pipe Band, which later became City of Washington. I believe...
