Re: Tuning-Middle Tenor First?

I always tune the outer tenor first, even during touch ups, because on my set the middle tenor has always been the least stable of the three. Bass is last.

Re: Help with getting the air I blow into the pipes!!

Wanted to add here that once again, for the gazillionth time, I got out my set of Lawries after a 2-3 week layoff (life had got in the way of playing). Lips were giving out after 5 minutes or so....

Re: Practice Chanter Reed Recomondation

I've had good luck with Warnock red PC reeds, both in my Lawrie standard PCs and my no-name ABW long PC I got at Hector Russell in the 1990s.

Re: Frequent Double Toning - Tenor Drone Reed

Not an expert on synthetic reeds, but if they were brand new, it stands to reason that they might have a little break-in time. I know I did with my Wygents and SM90's. Plastic bends.... etc.

Good...

Re: Help with getting the air I blow into the pipes!!

Could be reeds sucking too much air. I had that happen for a while when getting back into it. Took a while to get them fine tuned, i.e. trade-off between pitch, tone, and amount of air they were...

Re: Help with transition to pipes...

Amazing Grace. Skye Boat Song, etc. (Slow airs). The Dark Island, which was mentioned here, is also good. I've used that to warm up with a lot.

Slow airs are really handy to build up the lips and...

Re: Experiments with black wood chanters

The band I was in during the 80's used Hardie BW with Warnocks.... Very loud, but non-ridge cut reeds seemed to sound better in the Hardie. Seemed to make it sound a bit more plaintive and pleasant...

Re: Which is your priority with drone reed? Chanter interaction or standalone drone s

Stability and playability are paramount to me, basically -- do they stay on without squealing or warbling, do they strike in well, do they play well without sucking too much air, etc.

The tone is...

Re: Help with transition to pipes...

RE: increasing mouth strength: a little each day. And/or a little several times a day. Give the lips a chance to rest. It will come. Slow airs appear to be a little easier when gaining or re-gaining...

Re: Help with transition to pipes...

Just off the cuff, sounds like a hard reed.

Re: Drone bore mist

I don't have a modern bag, and sometimes blow 'wet'. I generally pull the blowstick out of the stock before storing the pipes in the case, and it seems to dissipate moisture adequately for my uses (I...

Re: What tune never gets old to you?

Of the more popular tunes, Green Hills. I know some have mentioned on these boards from time to time they tire of it... I just don't.

Re: Ridge or straight cut, which to you prefer?

The little experience I had with ridge cut reeds was the Warnocks we used in band and they were loud and trumpety compared to the molded reeds I much prefer.

Not sure if the other ridge cut brands...

Re: Drone instability, poor blowing or moisture?

Looks like everyone has it covered, only thing I could add is when re-hemping the drones use extra beeswax / tar / sticky stuff of your choice.

I noticed a difference when I re-hemped the ends of...

Re: Bagpipe Backlash - McDonald's restaurant

I wonder if they picked the worst sounding pipe recording they could find, on purpose. Certainly, there are better sounding ones. Yet, out-of-tune pipes are going to be more effective in annoying...

Re: Fake 'ivory'

I have no problem with Catalin. That's what is on my Lawries. Yeah, it's darkening towards orange. Shows its age.

I understand people are into aesthetics. I'm more concerned over whether they...

Re: Middle drone issue?

The middle drone on my pipes has always been the most apt to be temperamental, re-hemp or no. No cracks or obvious leaks. It may just be the design, or my blowing, although even when my blowing is...

Re: Replacement drone reed bridles?

Although this definitely would not work permanently, rubber bands can be used in emergencies, should a bridle break for some reason. They can be adjusted through the number of wraps to achieve...

Re: Hemping joints.

I have no idea. My Lawries came with all unwaxed hemp, although that was long ago.

Maybe Hardie is trying to give new pipers a little bit of a break, and their hemp wrappers, as well?

Re: Hardie Infinity chanters

Point taken, but it's like any field, there are always people trying to tweak, improve, create a market for a newer, updated product. And those ABW Naills you mention were probably a newer, updated...

Re: eBay says Lawrie, what say you?

I just did a rough compare with my Lawries, and the markings are different. I don't know the technical term for the bands of ring-like indentations, but they're obviously not like my Lawries.

Re: eBay says Lawrie, what say you?

It looks like an "R.G. Lawrie" stamp on one of the chanters, possibly the PC.

I can't tell if the pipe chanter is a Lawrie, as so many of the chanters of that era look similar to me. Same with the...

Re: Who'd have thought… (Squealing drones0

Hey, the bag was cheap and gets the job done, just use the right cover and you're set.

Interesting subject here. Shows how much each part of the instrument makes up the whole.

Re: Struggling with finger placement

Late to this thread, but one thing to remember is not all Practice Chanters feel the same.

My best one is a long PC with which the holes are easier to feel -- the holes themselves are slightly...
