Re: Just figure it out yourself

This is an example of the attitude that isn't helpful to a beginner like me. I am 40 plus and learning my first every instrument. Music theory is new and difficult for me. So transcribing is hard,...

Re: Just figure it out yourself

I agree Paul,

That response that I see all the time has stopped me from asking questions like that.

I can't do it myself, that is why I would be asking.

In most other cases this is an...

Re: Multiple students at one lesson

May I ask if the students youngsters or adults?
This can make a difference, especially as an adult student.

Although I do like the structure Kevin described.

Re: You play like a girl!

That is it though isn't it. Judging is subjective not objective.
It is how that judge on that day feels about that performance.
As I bet all judges are subtly different in what the hold most...

Well done to you.

Re: What do you wish someone had told you when you started?

This might be an unpopular one. And advice I would most likely ignored when I was starting out.

But if you are not going to compete or play in a band, this may not be the instrument for you.

Re: Pachelbel's Canon

You are not a cellist by any chance are you?

Re: Pachelbel's Canon

I have to agree here. I love this tune, my wife and I used it at our wedding over twenty years ago when we left the church.

Very tactfully put Pip.

Re: Massed Bands

I like massed bands,

As a lay person they are cool, impressive, powerful.
Maybe as a musician you get sick of playing the same three tunes over and over again, but maybe you should let yourself...

Re: New SSP piper

Yes I am really enjoying it.
Almost have the blowpipe stick length sorted out.

I do sometimes miss the shear power of the pipes though :)

But all up I am having more fun with the small pipes.

Re: New SSP piper

Thanks Bob,

Yes they are mouth blown, and the drones are across my shoulder.

I have found that most of the fitting issues stem from the blowstick being too long, we are rectifying that problem...

Re: New SSP piper

Thanks guys,

I am looking into finding a teacher near me at the moment.

I am struggling a bit with 'fitting' the small pipes to me.
I feel more comfortable playing them standing at the moment....

New SSP piper

Hi smallpipers,

I am transitioning from the GHB to SSP.
I have got a set of MacLellan Smallpipes. They are in A.
And I am moving on my MacLellan GHB, a sad day, but since I don't play in a band...

Re: Teaching myself? What practice chanter? Need advice.

This is important, so many good things come from steady blowing, not least of which is the ability to tune your pipes! Tuning is hard enough for a beginner if you are blowing steady, pretty much...

Re: So. Totally. Done. With wearing a kilt.

I didn't know that, do they always play electronic pipes?
That is Celtica isn't it?

Trading Post, Overseas purchase, would you buy?

Hello All,

I am looking to sell my MacLellans to fund a small pipe purchase.
Short story is I don't compete or play in a band and the big pipes aren't the best for just noodling around at home...

Re: So. Totally. Done. With wearing a kilt.

I think this is a fantastic option. I would be more than happy to have that option at my wedding, for me the sound of the pipes is what I am after and not so much the look.

As Andrew says also,...

Re: Lower hand thumb pressure

I add to the 'rest the chanter on the table' chorus.

It definitely helps. However the no thumb on the chanter at all didn't help me one bit, I found things much harder doing that.

Funnily...

Love for my poly practice chanter

Today was a maintenance day for my pipes.
Rehemping, oiling ( I know that is sacrilige to some), dressing the bag, tiding up my cords etc.

Once that was done, I thought I would check my trusty...

Re: Too many black arts for the new starters

For me it wasn't the 'black arts of piping' that was likely to put me off.
It was the expectation that you were either in a band or competing solo. If you weren't doing one of these two, what was...
