Re: Help with getting the air I blow into the pipes!!

It sounds to me like you just need to build the stamina back up (assuming everything is fine with your instrument).

I had to take a year or so off of playing and my first time back on the pipes...

Re: An experiment in notation

From what I see, they are written that way.

If possible, I would have the HA hole slightly off to the side or have more space between it and the HG to make it more obvious that itís on the back.

Re: Question on silver...

If the pipes are made in North America, there is no requirement that silver is hallmarked.

Re: Bagpipe woods

I'm not sure how well bog wood would work for bagpipes, but it's a common wood for smoking pipes and it's turned when used for them, so...

Re: 20mm Drone/Stock Bores - 4,000 year old link to measurements

Definitely an interesting read.

The Loughnashade trumpet seems very similar to the carynx, especially if there is, in fact, a second piece that attaches to it.

As to whether or not the wood...

Re: Shepherd pipes ...drone reed suggestions

IME, Shepherds are fairly subdued drones. Something big and bold such as Kinnairds could be what you need.

My PM used to play a set before he bought his Athertons and I think he had Ezee tenors...

Re: "Phase locking" drones

So I was just playing around with the concept a few minutes ago - pulled my tenors out of the stocks by about 1/4Ē or so. The tuning changed (not surprising, the effective stock length changed), but...

Re: "Phase locking" drones

What happens if you need to tune to a different pitch? When itís cooler, my pipes will be in the mid-upper 470s, while when itís hotter they can be in the low-mid 480s.

Re: Airstream TILT Expandable or FlexiStick TILT expandableBlowpipe

I, too, would advocate for tilting the stick in the collar.

That said, if youíre used to an airstream, Iíd stick with that brand. But thatís just me. Iíve never used either blowpipe in question.

Re: Harmonic support for chanter notes

Wouldnít a sting bass get you to the higher harmonics at a pitch closer to the chanter? It has a lower fundamental, which should give more presence to those specific harmonics.

As a brass player,...

Re: Harmonic support for chanter notes

The 7th harmonic, G, is so flat, that itís almost an F#. Could it be that those drones that did well with the F could have actually been a chanter with a slightly sharper F?

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

Definitely a big fan of your reeds so far, Terry. Will be playing the tenors for sure. I only got maybe 5-10 minutes on the bass, so the juryís still out on that one.

Re: Imitation ivory and UV.

In an X-ray, the synthetic material will show up different from natural materials. Or at least when Iíve seen security xrays in airports they do.

Re: Drone bore mist

Interesting. I find the opposite. Those in the band who leave their drones together and donít do much, have the most issues. Those of us who take all drone tops off and dismantle the upper sections...

Re: Musings on a probably impractical but compelling fantasy bagpipe

You could try getting a really easy chanter reed with an older chanter that pitches in Bb. It would probably be quieter and definitely easier and lower pitched than modern chanters.

For the...

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

Plugged the bass in for a few minutes to get it dialed in.

I definitely like the sound of it. Iím just not sure if I like it more than the sound of my Evo bass reed. Maybe Iím just too accustomed...

Re: First pipe band ó any advice?

In no particular order:

-Donít worry if you canít hear yourself. If you can, youíre out of tune or out of time.

-Keep your eyes on the PM.

-Own up to any mistakes you make.

-Shut up...

Re: Pipe bag/ chanter position

Why not just tie in the stock higher? Nothing says it had to be tied in at the very end of the neck.

Re: Shipping Bagpipes within the USA: Tips for Safe Trip

A former student of mine received her pipes direct from the manufacturer in Scotland in a similar manner. They were just in a beat up cardboard box, sitting on the doorstep.

Re: Worst Advice Ever?

Slow down doesnít necessarily mean perform slower. It could mean to work on a tune or even just a passage more slowly in practice to play it more accurately so you can then pick up the tempo and keep...

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

65Ē is when the reeds would finally shut off, using as much force as I could blow and squeeze (and very unsustainable). I then got them down to comfortable range in the mid-30s with some more...

Re: Ackland 480 Drone Reeds - Play Test, Comparison, & Review!

My gauge is really in mmHg (itís from a BP cuff), and it was around 120mmHg, which is a little under 65Ē water (which is 121 mmHg).

If youíre confused about the unit, inches of water is a pretty...
