Re: Head shakers

Interesting. Our thing was set up differently, with instruments done in pairs, so one semester trumpet/French horn, one semester trombone/tuba, one semester oboe/clarinet, one semester violin/viola,...

Re: Worlds - filling and test their bags

That's what I recall, that one piping judge noticed a piper wasn't playing, the other judge didn't.

Richard did a beautiful job of not showing any negative body language when he realized his bag...

eBay says Lawrie, what say you?

To me these look nothing like Lawries.

What say the experts? The projecting mounts are very interesting.

Re: Worlds - filling and test their bags

I know pipers doing a little test of the bag at the line is nothing new.

What I can't recall seeing before is a Pipe Major instructing all of the pipers to do it at the same time, when the band...

Re: Logistics and Politics of the RSPBA

I looked at the available online numbers quickly and came up with:

RSPBA Scotland branches and RSPBANI taken together: 257 competition bands.

Land area of Scotland and Northern Ireland: 36,350...

Re: Logistics and Politics of the RSPBA

The simple fact is that Scotland and Northern Ireland, taken together, have the greatest concentration of bands (most bands in the smallest area) of anywhere on earth.

Putting the Worlds anywhere...

Re: A piper's eye

Not only that but it has the classic bead on top of square-shouldered band, a common GHB motif (usually seen at the top of chanters, but also on many drones).

Re: Scottish Power - aluminium foil?

Wasn't the high that day 65f?

My Lord! If Mylar is needed for 65f/partly cloudy what should we be doing here, competing in 100f and cloudless skies?

Re: Head shakers

It's sweet revenge when your pipes are better in tune than the string quartet is!

They fight the same tuning battle we do. Sometimes the violins win, sometimes the pipes do.

I played at an...

Re: Head shakers

Actually we were discussing Bulgarian music, specifically the Ivo Papasov ensemble, which this eejit Doctor had heard.

But back to head-scratchers, one time I was out playing an a girl comes up...

Re: Head shakers

The head-shakingest part is when a comment like that comes from somebody with a Doctorate in Music!!

The background is that I used to play in a dance band that played a number of Bulgarian dance...

A piper's eye

We pipers see the world differently.

Proof of that, if proof were needed, was what caught my eye while leaving the Doctor's office yesterday, a concrete trash can

Re: World's Livestream for Friday

All I've seen info on is the Saturday BBC stream. It would be great to find out about Friday.

Of course the two-day format, put in place due to the difficulty of accommodating so many G1 bands on...

Re: Parting Glass, 2nd part

I play it on uilleann pipes, along with our singer, in our band.

It's no mystery how that song goes, it's common enough.

Here's the beginning of "the 2nd part" with my uilleann fingering...

Re: Loch Lomond sheet music

It's in every Scottish tune-book, pretty much.

I'm talking standard music books, not pipe arrangements.

And I'm sure you can instantly find it online.

Now, if you're talking...

Re: Celtic multi-instrumentalists?

I've been playing Highland pipes, uilleann pipes, and Irish whistle since the 1970s.

For over a decade I've been playing a nice antique set of Scottish Smallpipes.

In the trad trio I've been...

Re: Shuttle pipes before John Walsh

For sure a Rackett lacks shuttles! And a shuttle drone lacks fingerholes.

But the two are otherwise similar: a number of narrow parallel bores drilled in a fat cylinder of wood, the bores having...

Re: Chanter reeds, what makes good, what makes bad?

Here in Southern California Arundo Donax grows wild along seasonal riverbeds.

Uilleann pipe reedmakers have told me they really like the California cane, which they said is more resistant to...

and there's a link in that discussion to an earlier discussion. ...

Re: Anyone know these pipes, wood? Maker?

Yes the mounts look like cocobolo.

About the pipes themselves, ebony and ABW are easy to tell apart in person, not so easy from photographs. So I would just be guessing.

Re: Who makes this reed?

Well Harley I for one am impressed with the sound of that reed.

I have occasionally used a Clanrye plastic reed when I had a gig where my pipes had to be exactly in tune and the weather was...

Pipe band contest 1989

Just this week I digitized some slides I took at a Highland Games in 1989.

I'm not sure which Games.

I was evidently up in the stands, and took photos of several bands from the same angle.

Re: Piobaireachd

/piːbɛrjəxg/

Seems non-intuitive (or at least extra work) to have a devoiced fricative followed by a voiced stop, with no epenthetic vowel between.

For sure devoicing that g produces the k of...

Re: Irish Funeral

Yes Danny Boy, in A on GHB, starts on Low G# so halfholing yes.

Then soon comes a phrase that goes B Low A Low F#.

And the ending cadence goes Low F# Low G# Low A.

For which 99% of pipes...
