Re: Worst Advice Ever?

Maybe it's insulting/discouraging? If I can play more precisely at any speed than they can at a snails pace, maybe I'd prefer to loose 1% precision for +10bpm so I can have fun with it and...

Re: perceptions on horse hair

haha this is hilarious! It's great to hear some different perspectives, and now I'm wondering what pipe bands will look like in a few hundred years... In California I never see any normal kilts just...

Re: Startup question about small pipes

Yes, let me apologize for potentially misleading new players; reed manipulation will not fix poor technique and can potentially damage the reed. I am a highland piper dabbling in smallpipes so that...

Re: Startup question about small pipes

It's true, despite not being affected by moisture from the breath the humidity and temperature of the room can significantly affect the reed. Even playing in a small room long enough can make you...

Perceptions on horse hair

I've always been under the impression that civilians can wear horse hair sporrans, but since they're so frequently associated with military dress I'd like to confirm that there's no sentiment others...

Re: The reverse hands challenge

It's a total illusion, the first part is just 1 phrase reversed and the second you just gotta get the reversed low a grab down. Drunk people love it.

Re: Startup question about small pipes

Sorry you're right. I just kinda learned by trial and error and found what worked for me.

Re: Startup question about small pipes

Yea it's true the rubber band applies continuous pressure which will weaken the reed over time which may be more/less desirable, I don't know what other small pipers do but on highland pipe reeds...

Re: bag for second set

not sure how you feel about this but I'd rather keep the sheep, tie in the larger stocks and hemp up the smaller drones throw the reeds in a Tupperware with a Boveda and blamo!

Re: Startup question about small pipes

also adding a dental rubber band above the metal bridal can make things easier, you can fiddle around with the placement of either to adjust pitch/strength

Re: Startup question about small pipes

reed's too open - move the bridal (copper wire bit) up the blades and see if that helps. You should get a few seconds of noise with 1 bellows pump without even touching the bag.

Re: GHB reed in bombarde

Thanks, I think I ran across his site in French already but was intimidated by the language and prices in Euros, now that I'm searching his name directly I found the English site so I'll probably...

Re: GHB reed in bombarde

lol nice tip, of course a reputable reed shop in English would be ideal but any related information would be greatly appreciated. I'm not expecting 'competition grade tone' but I've heard it's been...

GHB reed in bombarde

Curious if anyone has any experience/tips with using GHB reeds in bombardes. I don't speak French so it's kinda hard to find decent information.

Re: How is this piper achieving these notes?

On the subject of 'illegal notes' if you ever need to clear the room it's possible to play this weird dysphonic 'high e' thing with x|xox|xoxo and 'pinching' the f finger.
edit for clarity as I...

Re: Flat high A

That's interesting, I'm not trying to be disagreeable but if wood shifting can have such an effect (which I don't doubt) does that mean we're relying on old recordings for reference? Have there been...

Re: Flat high A

Is the ‘flat A’ a recent phenomenon? I didn’t know about the ‘sharp d’, I’ve always played modern tunes on modern chanters so my ear is definitely biased towards what you might call ‘standard modern...

Re: Jiggification ok?

Rant incoming: copyright law is the anti-music; like there's a bunch of old tunes with different names in different books that are nearly identical except for a few phrases here and there right, but...
