Re: Moose Valve question

I thought about doing that, but didnít want to have to figure out something in an emergency when we have to pull our traps out at Pleasanton.

Re: Cutting The Tip Off Reeds

In his reed manipulation workshop with WUSPBA yesterday, Richard Parkes used a chisel to cut the tip off a reed.

Re: Goodwill Find

The only red flag I see is the bottle of ďBagtightĒ which, if Iím not mistaken, is the ďseasoningĒ that comes with MIME pipes.

Re: "Phase locking" drones

Hereís the video of the chanter reed. https://youtu.be/GCM7kVsYpvI

What I found interesting in this one was how long the reed is open on long notes. You can see some slight pulsing on the low A...

Re: How far will you travel for a gig?

For band competitions, Iíll travel quite a ways. Or regular season involves two contests in Northern California, each about 500 miles away. Our closest games (San Diego games) is about an hour drive...

Re: Has pitch topped out?

I still theorize that the chanter originally had a high G#, which was brought to G nat with the piob HG. Iíve seen many piob scores that specifically show G nat in the key signature as well as (IIRC)...

Re: changing attitudes towards Catalin

I’d say most of the students who go or went to my university (San Diego State) don’t know the actual school colours. Most assume that they’re red and black, when in actuality they are black and...

Re: First Exposure to Piping/Drumming

Actually, now that I think about it, my first exposure was at my church as a young child. Every year on St. Andrew’s Sunday, one of our members (who would eventually become my first piping...

Re: First Exposure to Piping/Drumming

My high school had a pipe band. My first exposure was them playing at my brotherís graduation when I was 8.

A few years later at a family friendís college graduation, there was a pipe band that...

Re: Hemping stock joints

I think the one that bothers me more, is when people hemp their bass bottom halfway down the pin rather than keeping the hemp on the hemp combs. And itís even more irksome when they have metal slides...

Re: Wrong-footed

Itís the 2-count E. Most 3/4 marches have an anacrusis (pickup notes) which means they should only have a 1-count E. But anything other than a 2-count E is seemingly impossible for many pipers.

Re: What's all this flap about flapper valves?

Haven’t tried these myself, but you can DIY your own flapper valve if you’re so inclined.

Re: Hemping stock joints

I always just hemp the combed section, but somehow the hemp always slides a bit on itself after Iím done and the smooth section at the top (by the mount) ends up with hemp in it after a while. Not so...

Re: What's all this flap about flapper valves?

I used to use a Moose valve, but had to switch back to a standard rubber flapper when I switched to a band-mandated tube trap.

Re: 2020 setup?

Youíre the first Iíve heard of to do Kinnaird tenors and Ezee bass. Itís always the opposite configuration.

Re: 2020 setup?

Dunbar drones, Begg sheepskin bag, deluxe tube trap with TrapDri stayed the same.

Changed tenor reeds from Kinnaird Evo to Ackland Overtones, bass is still Evo for now.

Chanter is either...

Re: Constructive Criticism for Pipers

Did they bring that back? Last time I competed, there was a big blacked out box at the bottom that read "Judge lift to mark CPL" or something to that effect.

Re: Idea for G1 band MSRs

I know they (usually) pick the set at the line. Iím suggesting they donít have set MSRs, but a few of each tune type, more similar to how it is with soloists.

At the line, the PM draws M2, S1,...

Re: Identify Pipes

I donít think theyíre Wallace. The mounts are different shapes and the stocks have a more square tie in foot, whereas the Wallace are more rounded.

Idea for G1 band MSRs

Since the top bands all seem to play the same tunes in their MSRs, what if they had to draw their tunes at the line, similar to how you would have to in solo performance?

Each band would have to...

Re: Help with getting the air I blow into the pipes!!

It sounds to me like you just need to build the stamina back up (assuming everything is fine with your instrument).

I had to take a year or so off of playing and my first time back on the pipes...

Re: An experiment in notation

From what I see, they are written that way.

If possible, I would have the HA hole slightly off to the side or have more space between it and the HG to make it more obvious that itís on the back.
