Where are you putting your pipes when not playing?

I had an issue where all of my drone tops cracked due to what I now believe was severe humidity changes (15% ambient air humidity at the time). Now I completely disassemble mine. Chanter out and...

paraplegic piping

If you find the GHB to be to cumbersome give your situation you could look into bellows or mouth blown smallpipes as well. Same fingerings, smaller instrument, and designed to be played while seated.

(Promise, not trolling...) National Anthem

When I am asked to play the SSB, I politely refuse and explain the note limitations of my pipes. I then offer to play "To the Colors" which is the Bugle's way of rendering national level honors and...

Hemp preference

I use real Hemp with beeswax for most of my joints. I had trouble with my tenor tops given that the hemp is thicker than the linen thread, so my tuning joints are yellow waxed linen.

Ivory ban

It is important to remember that before the advent of plastics ivory and other similar natural materials were used not only for their looks but also for their functionality. If you needed something...

Did you say Wee Pipes?

My son (2 years old) has a wee set similar to the one below courtesy of his aunt. After much finagling they now "play."

He stomps around the living room saying "quick march" and humming amazing...

Cracked Stocks Already on New Pipes ?

I had an issue with cracks, though not in my stocks (search for the 7 cracks thread for details). Roddy MacLellan was very quick to respond with repairs to my drones. I am quite pleased with the...

7 cracks in drone top ferrules

Received my pipes back from Roddy Thursday night. They looked just as good as before. I fired them up at the Dublin Pub (local bar) last night and they sound great too. He used a glue or epoxy...

7 cracks in drone top ferrules

For the record, I have metal (bronze) ferrules on my pipes.

To address an earlier comment on hemping: cracking under 4 ferrules points to a global (vs localized) issue. During regular play, i.e....

7 cracks in drone top ferrules

No Teflon tape on the tuning slides. The only place I use Teflon tape is on the threads fort mouthpiece.

I doubt I hemped all 4 slides enough that cracks developed in all 4 ferrule locations...

7 cracks in drone top ferrules

That is correct. It was the ferrules on the top section if the drones, not the bell area.

I don't think it was tight hemp given the ease of movement, but I guess it could have been swelled...

7 cracks in drone top ferrules

I debated where to put this and decide it would best fit here under the "instrument" heading.

On the 28th of February I finished an early morning practice session at work, began my post playing...

How do you practice when you can't practice.

When I need to be really quiet, I ratchet up my rubber band on the PC reed as high as it will go. On my Abbott PC reed it is incredibly quiet. So much so that people cannot hear me across the...

Custom sporran chains?

I am not aware of one. If you are unable to find one an alternative could be a set of custom leather sporran suspenders with maple leaves worked into the leather.

quick re-start help?

Play full bore (chanter, both tenors, and bass) for as long as you can. When you can't go at it any longer take a breather for a few minutes. Cork a tenor and go again. When that gets to much,...

So...when in the beer tent...

The best beer is always the one someone else buys.

If I must part with my hard earned money I like a stout or at least a darker ale.

USA kilts?

Being short on cash I recently purchased an AcryliKilt. I must say I was impressed with the value. Notice I said value, not quality. It was not a high quality garment, but it was exceptional for...
