Anndrah - I did the same thing with silicone rubber many years ago. Everyone said it would fall off, but it stayed on for about 5 years until the band gave everyone new covers.

Plumber's teflon tape will hold up just fine. I've had it on plumbing joints in my house for many years with no problem.

Maybe the chanter reed is cracked, or has opened up on the sides? You might want to see how hard it is by mouth blowing the reed in the chanter.

No. I just lean the seat back a little (I sit in the middle row). I'm about 5 foot 6, so YMMV. An adjustable blowpipe helps - make it shorter, and the drones lean back at a angle.
