Re: Dorne Reed Info: Lowering Pitch Hack

I've been using brass hobby tubing inside bass drone reeds for a few years to easily tune down around 466 HZ:shrug:

Re: Why can some pipes play 2 octaves?

Regarding the bold section above- this explains why oboes and saxophones overblow an at octave, but clarinets (cylindrical bore) overblow at the 12th.

Re: Jazz standards for GHB?

It would depend on what you mean by "Jazz." If trad/NewOrleans style, I know "Didn't He Ramble" and "Back Home In Indiana" work .
(I used to play tuba in trad jazz bands).

Re: A piper's eye

I haven't had a chance to record it yet. That said, with my current reed, I'm not entirely happy with the C natural. I'll try it in a different chanter/reed combination.

That said, it should work...

Re: A piper's eye

There are two options: 1. play it in B dorian, which would require a high B and high G # ( another downside- it might sound weird against A drones); 2. Play it A dorian, which would mean...

Re: A piper's eye

I'm not sure it would neatly fit the GHB scale. It's in Dorian mode, FWIW., so if the lowest note was G, you'd need a C natural. I'll give it a try and get back with results.

Re: Head shakers

…how could I have forgotten, one semester on percussion, where we had to play on snare, timpany, xylophone. ( My first parade with the pipe band was as substitute bass drummer, which is also how I...

Re: Who'd have thought… (Squealing drones)

Yes, but note that the problems with this particular bag occurred with bags that were too big. That bag is too elastic for easy control without a snug bag cover. ( I have a hide bag on the way:thumb:)

Re: Adjustable blowpipe ID

Thanks, Wes, but the Crisler blowpipes have a different valve in the tenon- this one has the end turned to the specs fo a Li'l Mac Valve and uses the same valve and cap.

Re: Adjustable blowpipe ID

That's what I thought it was. Did the old models have the Li'l Mac integral to the tenon?

Re: Who'd have thought… (Squealing drones0

Same drones, same chanter, same reeds same piper, same strike-in, same cut-off, same Tune . The only variable in the experiment was the bag cover. I get it that you don't believe it, but that's what I...

Re: Who'd have thought… (Squealing drones0

Thank you for your always constructive posts. I might just do that.
…But in the meantime, there's some research done into what the actual fault was and how to avoid it in future (besides, of...

Re: Who'd have thought… (Squealing drones0

I'll have a go at re-creating the scenario tonight and will report back.

As for the Hoary old piping expert- two thoughts:
1. He may not have dealt with synthetic bags of unknown origin…
2....

Re: Who'd have thought… (Squealing drones0

No disrespect taken, but this Indian has been piping for 40 years and has been a professional musician for 50. Not my first rodeo, and not my first troubleshooting exercise.:thumb:

Re: Who'd have thought… (Squealing drones0

I would have said so myself, had I not experienced it. The second bag cover was loose the first was snug. The ONLY difference between the set up on Wednesday and Friday nights was the bag cover. The...

I'd have said, next time, I'll bring my tuba.

FWIW, I've heard some AFM locals don't consider bagpipers to be Musicians. I'm proud to be long to the bsame...
