Re: Difference between a Salute, Gathering and a Lament?

I think some tunes just seem as if they've got the wrong title, eg one of my favourite tunes, "Salute on the Birth of Rory Mor MacLeod", always feels more like a Lament to me every time I listen to...

Re: Canmore Hybrid bags

For those of you who have played the Canmore Synthetic and the Canmore Hybrid, how would you compare them in terms of handling moisture?

Stocks in Canmore Bag

Got a new Canmore Synthetic (Medium) bag a week or two ago. Very happy with it comfort wise and seems to be airtight.

There's only one thing that's bothering me - I can twist the stocks in the...

Re: Setting drone reeds on Sinclair GHB

Hello Redmist,

I've recently acquired a set of 1970s Sinclairs and the tenors do indeed like
to tune quite low on the pins.

However, my biggest problem is the bass drone tuning too high -...

Re: The Men went to Drink

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I've recently started listening to the tunes
on the Piobaireachd Society site and I was really taken with this tune which I'd never heard before, (obviously...

Re: Lament for John Morrison of Assynt House

I really like that tune as well. There's a good recording of Angus MacColl playing it on the Piobaireachd Society website.

Older Naill - Orange Sole

I've recently been given an older Naill Solo chanter to try out.
I'd like to know how old it is and I'm wondering if its "orange" sole
might give an indication of its age ie would this type of...

Foot Tapping

At a recent high level contest I attended, I noticed that several of the
pipers tapped their feet during the crunluath and a mach variation. I think possibly
one of them did the same at the...

Re: Old Cane Bass

Many thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I'm going to persevere with it for a while as I think it's got potential to be a good sounding reed.

Old Cane Bass

I'm currently rejuvenating an old cane bass reed I found in one of my boxes.
This reed probably hadn't been played for maybe 25 years until a couple
of weeks ago when I started trying to bring...

Re: The nerve of some people!

I have a lot of sympathy with the OP.

I'm sure the vast majority of pipers will stop playing in a public place if asked to do so.

However, surely there's a difference between someone making a...

Re: Grainger & Campbell pipes, early & late

Bought a set in 1987, which I still play.

Generally very happy with them and have had good comments about them.

The tenors do generally tend to tune very low on the pins, (certainly with the...

Thank you all for your replies.

I've managed to get one going really well, and working on the other one.
I've also bought a couple of new cane tenors and have been breaking one of them in over...

Cane Tenor - double tone problem

For the past few years I've played a cane bass and synthetic tenors.

However, a couple of weeks ago I found an old box of cane tenors that I didn't know I had and couldn't resist the temptation...

Re: Trap-Dri Moisture Control X Tube Bottle Trap X Moose Valve Modification

I'd like to echo previous comments and thank you for your excellent description of the way you did this.

I'm going to buy a trapdri myself in the near future and I've also got a Bannatyne Tube...

Hydrogen Peroxide

Looking to maybe buy some of this to clear a small amount of mould on
a relatively new pipe chanter reed.

It seems I can get it at 3% or 6% or "Food Grade" etc. If anyone's used this...

Re: grainger campbells

I play 1987 G&Cs and the tenors tune really low on the slides whichever reed I use in them. I currently use Selbie reeds in them and I think they sound pretty good, again tuning very low though.

It's just that i'm thinking of investing in a cowhide bag at the moment, and i'm just interested to know what people's experiencess with them have been. Could cowhide's lack of moisture absorption be...

Re: Goatskin bag feedback requested ...

So they're better on cost, maintenance and lifespan and not so good on tone and thickness. Is it worth paying so much more for slightly better tone that most average players might not even notice?

Re: Goatskin bag feedback requested ...

While we're on the subject of bags, I've often wondered with Cow Hide bags being significantly less expensive than other skin bags, what are the major disadvantages with them, that make them less...

Cane Bass - Settling Time

For those of you who play a cane bass reed, I was wondering how long it
takes for it to settle i.e. stay in tune, not withstanding minor retuning. My tenors(Selbie) are usually tuned within...

Re: Tuning the Bagpipes

Have any of you guys tried this test (blowing the bag up to stop the drones with the chanter stock corked) and if so how long do your drones stay quiet for? I tried this tonight just out of interest...
